That doesn't prevent corrosion entirely though... Mine has several issues I need to get sorted this winter - doors, front fenders and around rear spoiler mounting (I have the "limited edition" detachable rear spoiler). Nothing that will leave holes anytime soon, but still.... Aluminum may not rust but it still corrodes, galvanized or not.

Hey Jim, did you sell your's or are you shopping for a new project? I was interested, but I think we've got to get an econobox instead. I've seen rust bubbles and cracks around an edge or a flange which is consistant with rust occuring away from the surface of the panel on galv metal. The water seeps under a seal or around the edge of a screw and gets into the tin, then the oxidation starts. Doc

According to the Porsche Panaorama for April 1977, the entire ( steel only, of course) part of the body is galvanized. - that is promarily the rear quarter panels, rear hatch and roof, front fenders, hood and doors are aluminium. Rust spots may show up at several points, particularly around the rear hatch where dissimilar metals make contact ( the black anododized trim around the glass, for ...

thanks for the info on this. the galvanizing still helps alot and will keep the body much more solid than withhout. i decided to hang on to the euro and am strongly considering supercharging. decided there was no way i could find a comparable replacement car for money i could sell it for. i wish i could find a cheap 5-speed 78-79 no sunroof, no sidestriped car in very good shape around me i ...

H is right, the only rust you typically see are on cars that have been repainted and they were sanded to bare metal through the galvanization. The whole body of the car is steel of course and just the bolt on items such as hood, front fenders and doors are aluminum.

I dont believe all porsches post 1973 are galvanized, but all 928s are galvanized. I have owned several 914s and none of them have been galvanized post 73.

Right Lane (or is that Left Lane), I had a 74 914 2.0 liter that rusted out like an old garbage scow that had plied the salty seven seas. When I traded it in they had to come to my house and take it away on a flatbed truck. Joe Celeste Seminole, FL

There are Porsche's and then there are Porsche's. Bodies for some models were made outside Stuttgart Zuffenhausen plant and this is IMHO very good explanation for different fully galvanized dates. 914 was made by Karmann and they probably didn't have facilities to do the job while '73-'77 period 911 production line at Porsche's own factory did. Similarly 924/944 series had partly different paint options than...

I have read both. ( [1] All Porsches from 1977 on were galvanized. [2] All Porsches from 1973 on were galvanized.) I read both those statements here in this very thread...which speaks volumes for the phrase "cite your source". ;-)
