2004 raptor 660r and a 1996 s10 zr-2 ... 147k miles. Found the truck at a dealership hidden in the back of their lot... $1900 including tax title and licensing turns out an employee hid it back there, hoping to buy it in a few months ... he was claiming it wouldn't start and well .... luckily I carry jumper cables

i never had that problem with my '86 4runner (since your post refers to an '88)
One thing you don't say is if the person with the '88 had a complete exhaust that was properly routed to the side of the truck.
I did not have a rear air deflector, just a properly routed stock exhaust
