This is really alarming: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/16/detroits-unemployment-rat_n_394559.html I don't know how true the numbers are, but, if they are, a near 50% unemployment rate in a city means trouble. In this case, perhaps some of the money that is being thrown around should be channeled there.

Atithee, you are right about our players playing in German/ Dutch leagues a few years ago. I think Jagbir Singh & Rach (India's coach at the time) facilitated their placements. Most of the players spent only 1 season, although Gagan Ajit Singh continued for another season or two. I think Dhanajay still plays in the German league. There maybe some regulations specific to each country (eg not more than 4 overseas players per team),...

SSP, are there any restrictions that would prevent Indian players from playing in these leagues en masse? I believe a few did already. Are our players not good enough, living conditions difficult, financial arrangements not attractive, ....?

Yes, ours looks much the tougher group, especially given our mental block when playing Pakistan. The other pool also has Germany, Holland, Korea, so it wouldn't have been much easier -- given the shambolic state of Indian hockey.

This year saw some special performances from Indian tennis players. Yuki Bhambri became the first indian junior to win a grand slam since Leander & then had an excellent run in Indian futures circuit winning 5 titles. Leander won 2 grand slams after a long time. But, I rate achivements in mens singles higher then juniors & doubles. Therefore, my vote goes to Somdev . He had 3 remarkable performances this year. He became the...

Yes, having a professionally run club competition would help in identifying and developing talent but a low quality, unprofessional club competition would not help much in developing talent (although it should still help in identifying talent). Look at the low quality football leagues in India and its impact on our national football team. Agree with Viren that we need to somehow coach the coaches as well. I know that there are some...

UT is the best option, but Telangana separatists would not agree a Telangana state without Hyderabad. They very well know that without Hyderabad, Telangana has no source of income!!! It will crumble. The second major problem would be allocation of water. Two massive projects (Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar) are in the Telangana/Andhra border. Who should get these dams? Also, there are couple of them being built at the moment in Telangana. There...

While these comparisons are interesting they are somewhat misleading as indicators of achievement-- the depth of the pool in these two pools is very different. A slow start for Gagan in the qualifying as he finished 1 under par that puts him 9 strokes behind the leader(-10) and 5 strokes behind the group of 5 players tied at -6. Its a 6 day grueling tournament the players will go through lots of emotional roller coaster. Gagan had 3 birdies and 2 bogeys for the day.

Jokers, if it were not a public forum, I would have shared a few other choice words. It is not about Charlesworth; he may or may not be useless. But, someone should realize that apart from giving media interviews, they have got to do something. Just saying that we have enough people who know hockey is not enough. Show me someone who has done something in modern hockey and not a 84 year old (...

Thanks Sam for starting this! I really miss Doc and his witty posts. I hope the scholarship fund that we talked about in his forum turns into a reality soon. I voted for Sania because there isn't anyone among the current Indian players whose achievements come anywhere close to what she has achieved so far. She is the lone star in an otherwise dull Indian (women) tennis landscape. She is ...

Well, the coach has been appointed for the u23 team going to the SAFF cup (and for AFC challnge and Asiad), as per Houghton's recommendation Sukhwinder quits JCT for India I like the selection. Some 4 or 5 guys from JCT (who have brought up some home grown talent rather than rely on foriegners) will be there in the team too - including the current I-league scoring leader Baljit Sahni .. ...

Overall good selection ... Yeah, surprisingly Prabodh Tirkey's name is missing from the squad ... Also interesting to note that Rajpal Singh replaces Sandeep Singh as Indian Captain for this important tournament, though on Canadian tour Basra used rotation policy for captaincy. Our team will leave for Madrid on November 23 for a one-week training-cum-competition tour en-route to Salta. BDO Men...

IN the US open junors Yuki has reached the second tound & will face fellow NBTA acadamy trainee Philip Krajinovic. This is about the match from NBTA website - It was a very solid win for Krajinovic, who will now face fellow NBTA student, Yuki Bhambri, in the second round. Bhambri won in three sets over American Denis Kudla. This should be an excellent match between two players that know ...
