Kevin I just looked at your blog. I see you have an inboard engine. Isn't one engine aboard enough? And if your engine is diesel you will be adding a second type of fuel as well. Your refrigeration is about 3 1/2 amps and lights aren't much if used judiciously - a few led lights could help a lot. Your charger is 10 amps - meaning it will only put out 10 amps in bulk charge - after the batteries reach 80% charge it puts out a lot...

I think you'll need the second owner to take title of the boat and then transfer the title to you.

It's worth what you can get for it! Like Buffett said, if you want to know what something is worth, buy some of it and then try to sell it.

How to survey a swing keel?
Published (2009-11-28 23:05:00)
I believe I know what to look for: Keel that has water intrusion and is getting puffed out. Connector or cable or crank corrosion well damage. How do you in practice check it out adequately? If the boat is on a trailer little can be seen. If the boat is in the water you can see how it behaves but still not see it. Is their any option other than putting it on a lift. Since these boats are often only a few thousand, a lift could be a large...

I cannot speak well enough of the little Honda generators. They are compact, whisper quiet, simple and durable. They're so good that we use them in my reserve unit for a few things.

"Looking for a cheap safe spot in South fl. area to leave boat on the hard" Sorry, but cheap, safe and S. Florida just don't go together. If you want cheap storage you have to go at least up to the lower Chesapeake. Safer up there too.

It depends on how much of the boat has to be taken apart Seriously on many boats you have a really perfect kitchen area over a mid-engine install which could require a massive amount of labor that's more or less being done in a china cabinet I swear the devil installed the A4 in my Cal 29 i had to make several special wrenches to reach the nuts from the side holes drilled into the fiberglass engine bed

Bonehead move of the month
Published (2009-11-28 07:09:00)
Hey, Welcome to The Club!! Bonehead moves are my specialty. I've had a few close calls similar to yours, but I usually just drop expensive/critical things overboard. One year we got my sister a new kayak for her birthday. We hid it belowdecks on our boat. When they rafted up with us, we sang happy birthday then pulled the kayak out and surprised her. We launched, then she and several of the kids gave it a try. But this being summer time,...

I have just purchased a sailing boat (34ft) in Rhode Island and am looking for a one person to assist me in sailing her back home to England! I'm hoping to do this at the end of January 2010. I'm French and have not sailed a boat this distance before, infact i have not sailed for a while! I was going to do this solo but my wife is insistant that i have someone alongside me, and due to her work ...

I saw them at the recent boat show, and they look nice. As you are in the Northwest, you might find this book useful, and you might contact Roger McAfee, the author, to get his opinion.

I have a piece of plexi over a hole in my cockpit where an insert used to be. The autohelm has its mounts there and it is currently cracked and has a tendency to leak so its taped over with blue tape at the moment.
My plan is to fiberglass over the hole to seal it up and then remount the autohelm bracket to the fiberglass. I have decent access to the inside of the hole so was planning to ...

Refrigeration which draws 40W?
Regardless, although Menards is one of my favorite stores, I'd look at opening up the wallet and get one that is both quiet and dependable, i.e., a Honda.
These clones are generally poorly made and impossible to obtain parts or service for.

Hi
Is there not a way to install the batteries aft somewhere? I have a 27' boat and could fit 4 batteries aft. I'd work to do this if possible. Ideally all 4 (connected as 1 bank) will be together.
As far as the windlass goes, the best most economical way is to put a starting type battery forward near the windlass with short heavy cables to the windlass (1/0 as an example) and charge ...

Ok - not to dredge up another Rocna vs Manson Supreme debate...but I need to. I noticed my searches for older threads on the topic reference the pricing being very high on Rocnas due to the lack of distributorship. Well, I think this is less relevant since both are now carried at our local Worst Marine...which is having some pretty good sales of late. I'm able to get 25% off retail price plus ...

Lets say you find a good boat with an engine that works but is old.
The boat is priced accordingly, old engine but working.
If you re-power how much could you realistically expect to recover when selling the boat?
Now I suspect the answer will depend on lots of things like:
Price of the boat
What else was replaced, prop, shaft, alternator, fuel tank?
How good of job was done (engine ...

I've owned both and from an emissions and cleanliness standpoint, 4-stroke is the way to go. The fuel problems can be overcome by either draining the fuel system, running it regularly, and adding Seafoam.
The fuel stabilizer "Sta-bil" seems to react badly with ethanol blended fuel, sometimes creating a jelly or sludge after sitting for long periods. Seafoam fuel additive works much ...

For a number of years I kept a Garmin 76 at my binnacle with a plug to connect it to my 12V supply. I was pleased with it until I found that all of it's tide and current data was obsolete as of this past spring. I purchased a Garmin 440 for our trip up to Maine from Florida and our return this november. I'm not fond of interfacing much of my equipment, so I don't have the model that allows ...

I think I'd probably ask to see the zincs. But 6 months can dissolve a lot of zinc depending on conditions in the marina. How long did the zincs last previously? If they needed it there's no better time than when the diver is already down scrubbing. I recently had our local diver scrub my prop and shaft and replace the zinc for $90. He was already here doing a neighbor's boat and in my case I can...

Or just make up a mold and make a glass box with no top, then make a flat board and glass it on to make the top. Making fiberglas boards is easy and fast, as long as you're not too fussy about how they look
