Will's got a bit of a double chin!!! Yippee! Keep putting on the weight, handsome man!!! He's really come a long way, hasn't he! Keep up the good work, he'll be asking for the cars keys and the twenty bucks pretty soon, by the look of him!

over this whole coaching change thing. Considering her young age, she is being extremely positive and understanding and mature. She was so excited yesterday as she apparently did a couple of 2Sals and 2Toe Loops yesterday and an accidental 2Flip (meant to be a double toe) with one of the new coaches. She almost has an increased enthusiasm about her training but acknowledged her sadness as well- pretty insightful for a just turned 9 year old...

NHK Trophy 2009

Watching the ladies' short program on icenetwork during lunch. Man, Ashley Wagner came to play - her spins are incredible. She fought for that triple flip/double toe combination - bravo! Triple axel looked cheated on the landing. Loved the entire program, start to finish as well as the costume. Wow, wow, wow! There were a lot of falls and mistakes by the earlier skaters, but now I'm into the last few skaters so it should get really...

^ Having seen kids at the rink who can barely skate without falling down yet who are trying to muck about with hockey sticks, I have to second this. There've been a couple times when I've wanted to say to the instructor, "will you teach him to SKATE first???"

OnTempo My edges have finally come back. My ankle is healed enough that I'm finally up to doing crossovers. Three turns both ways (even on the bad ankle). Some backward stroking. Stood around with the other adult regulars watching 'mystery guy skater' give some waltz jump tips to one of the other adult women skaters. When do you buy skating dresses?
Published (2009-11-08 07:42:00)
Book slot with dressmaker in March; send measurements in June; pick up dress in July; compete in August. Pray it doesn't get outgrown before end of season from then on.

The chart you've linked to says "non-qualifying" at the top. I think this is because they're showing all the levels that might be offered at a regular club (non-qualifying) competition. Juvenile is the lowest level offered at qualifying competitions. The first qualifying competition of the season is Regionals. Skaters advance from there to Junior Nationals (Juvenile and Intermediate levels) ...

I wouldn't be much good for a massage before a competition, but after i would be ok with a chair massage. Especially if I have to drive 2 hours to compete then hang around for hours-my neck/shoulders get really tense! That's me not sure how everyone else feels about it (I could use a massage right now but I also need a new pillow).

I never got them at any particular time of year. New competition dresses came with new programs, whenever that happened. New practice dresses came when the old ones were outgrown.

Do you start your 2-ft. glides on the flat , meaning you are skating 'straight forward'? This is usually the easiest way to start, as you lift your free-foot. Then as you feel comfortably, you can give it more speed such that when you lift your foot, you will continue... in a straight line.
After you gain confidence skating on one foot straight ahead, you can do this also on an edge , ...

Face plant during a spiral today for me. Yikes! I have never done that before. I think I was thinking too much about avoiding the group of adults chatting in the middle of the rink and not paying attention to staying over my blade. I had the wind knocked out of me and bashed my pelvic bone pretty bad. My ears were even ringing for a while. I feel ok now, so there doesn't seem to be any real ...

there's nothing to keep you from wearing the silipos gel tubes around your heels. I do it all the time. You'll need to get a long silipos tube and cut it to a length that will slip over your heel up to your ankle. Surprisingly, they don't feel bad under your foot.

If you don't have access to a coach you will have limited gains from distance learning. Here is a good hockey skating resource:
http://www.hockeytutorial.com/
I suggest you take lessons in the figure skating style until you are good at basic skills, then you can cross over to hockey skating-the basic skills are the same.
Good Luck!!

Failing looks pretty common, from what I've observed. There can be lots of reasons - here's a few:
Skater isn't really ready but attempts the test anyway (scheduling reasons maybe)
Skater is ready but gets overcome by nerves and skates badly
Judges are human, some have higher standards than others
Coaches are human, some might think a skater is ready before she is.

Holy cow! Was that ever a quick lock-'er-up! I almost got bumped by the door on my way out!
I wanted to add that PA's special soothing recliner is in place right by the window and we need to decide exactly where little William's crib is going to go.

At 11 years old, your DD is more than old enough to tell you when she wants to stop or wants less ice time. If she is enjoying what she is doing and wants to go to the rink when it's time, then I don't see how this could possibly be hurting her. As you said, many children her age are doing much, much more (at that age, you're talking juvenile competitors so lots of training time on and off ice). ...
