Not everyone has free will, but not everyone has been brainwashed at a young age to do only what some ancient text tells them to do, and not to think for themselves - therefore many people simply dont have "free will". Update: I guess I could always use the Corsair H50 CPU Cooler for the CPU, but I'm concerned about where/how I'd mount it (preferably without whole-drilling, etc) and whether that fan gets noisy at all.
My PC is often on for long periods of time... occasionally used for semi-intensive gaming (think COD:MW2), but mostly for mundane business-running tasks and multi-monitor net browsing. ...

I have no idea how much Blender 3D stresses a CPU and running using 8 threads might actually lower performance. I’d be curious to know how much the system consumes when running Orthos as there’s more data available to make a comparison.
So it boots at a FSB lower than 333 but not below 300! You might just be unlucky with your combination as I’ve under-clocked the FSB on recent Intel ...

The Samsung F2 500GB SATA drives (HD502HI) are very close to silent, and at least in the US are incredibly cheap. Probably a bit slower than your old Baracudas, but not much.

I wish the Pipeline and LP models weren't so closely compared. I'm afraid some casual skimming type readers will assume the LP series as a whole will behave the same as the 4 platter 2TB Barracuda LP.
It's worth noting that the 1.5 TB Barracuda LP still uses 4 platters and has the same noise profile as the 2TB Barracuda LP. http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/disc/ma nuals/desktop/...

1) Do you plan to overclock, or run stock? IMO, stock AMD is better value for a budget system, but if you O/C, the Intel parts are better value. Since the C2D, they all easily overclock like mad.
2) How much are you budgeting for the video card? That obviously has a *huge* impact on how much is left in your $700 bogey...

I have an aging machine... xp-m 2400+ with an ATI Radeon 9600xt graphics card. Lately I keep running into more and more videos that it struggles to play. I know this machine is pretty old, but I would have thought my video card would do some hardware acceleration on videos and allow to play some fairly modern content. The Coral Reef wmv-hd clip MikeC uses in all the reviews is a good example... ...

After reading some comments on the different Aplus and Xclio style cases (those with 22cm side fans), I came to this conclusion: While the fans themselves aren't necessarily that bad, side fans cannot offer much improvement to the old ATX case design.
And why? My guess is because they blow on the motherboard, but not past it. On the side of the graphics card, not past it (and not through ...
