From the New York Times, November 2, 2009: E. Coli Kills 2 and Sickens Many; Focus Is on Beef Two people, one from New Hampshire and another from upstate New York, have died after eating ground beef that may be responsible for an E. coli outbreak linked to illness in more than two dozen people. The suspect beef was produced by a company in western New York State, Fairbank Farms, which issued a voluntary recall Saturday for 545,699 pounds of...

"This Is It" is This Is A Bore! It's just a flim-flam flick, hyped up to cash in. It's not worth paying for a ticket. Trust me, give it a miss!

Philippine elections 2010

If Erap really loves the poor and the Philippines, like he tells us so often, he should realize that the best thing he can do as a patriot is to not run for President.

More mass killing
Published (2009-11-06 11:14:00)
Another puzzle for the mass murder psychiatrists... At Fort Hood in Texas, a US Army officer went on a rampage yesterday, killing 11 people and wounding about 30 others. The villain is apparently an Army psychiatrist himself... With a name like Major Malik Nidal Hasan, he probably originated in the Mid-East. Apparently his Army unit was about to be sent to Iraq and he didn't want to go. Everyone is still trying to work out the details of...

Danger! Pedestrian Xings
Published (2009-11-05 18:11:00)
One very basic road rule in the Philippines is that when a vehicle hits a person, the vehicle driver is presumed at fault, i.e. guilty until proven innocent. This applies anywhere anytime, never mind if the pedestrian was plainly at fault, whatever, and also on "pedestrian crossings."

Korean Restaurant North of Manila

Thanks Simon. It will be just my wife and me. We were talking about Korean food this morning and she said she thought there were some up there. I'll see if we can find it later in the week. Did you all stay dry?

I have to disagree. In my area there's now a big SM mall on one corner, a Save More on the opposite corner and 3 or 4 Mini-Stops and 7-Elevens within walking distance in all directions. The prices are about the same in both SM...

Another madman runs amok … this time in Germany. 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer went to his former small-town secondary school yesterday, shot 9 teenage pupils and 3 teachers dead, then 3 bystanders, then himself. All except 1 of the 9 pupils killed at the school were girls and the three teachers were also women.
The day before in the US, 28-year-old Michael McLendon killed 10 people then ...

I think I'm going to be in the Philippines for a while so it's time for me to learn to Tagalog - or is it Pilipino, the language I mean.
Anybody know where I can get Tagalog lessons, either at a school, or with a tutor, home learning, or whatever is best?

Is there a " wealth gap" between them? Like, is she much richer than he? Don't want to sound cynical but you know how it can be

We have a mix of PLDT DSL and Globe phone broadband plus I also use Smart Bro.
For us PLDT is faster and less "glitchy" than Globe. Smart Bro is useful as it works most places especially when I'm away from the office, but it's not fast as landline internet.
Seeing as you have a temporary location for a few months, I'd suggest you use Smart Bro while you're waiting to move. That will ...

When is a pedestrian safe when he is crossing the official place for pedestrians to cross the road and for cars to stop and let him cross?
I've been footing it around Makati and Ortigas a lot in the past few weeks and have found out that these "Pedestrian Crossings" are NOT safety zones, they are danger zones.
You see them marked clearly with white bars, often with big signs, so you ...

Okay, he has a good family pedigree. But is Noynoy Aquino old enough and tough enough to cope in the Malacanang cat fights.
And I believe Noynoy is a straight shooter, not corrupt, brought up by his family to be honest. How can he fit into Philippine politics?

Assuming you're in Bulacan, then Angeles City is probably your best option. There's a "Little Korea" cluster there. Head west along Fields/Perimeter Road past the bars, maybe a couple of kilometers, to the Clark SEZ Friendship Gate with the Friendship Highway on your left. There are several Korean restaurants there.
I went to a very good one but it's name was in Korean so I have no idea ...

Don't feel too bad about your bridge ... you're not alone. There are similar " Broken Bridges to Nowhere" that I know of in Tarlac/Zambales and in Cavite, and probably dozens more scattered around the Philippines.
Some donor/aid country or organization makes the bridge, the locals run out of or "divert" the money for their part of the project, and the bridge just sits there rotting....
