I would love to see them in Seattle as well. Also, would be great to have them in Eugene again. So glad the Hayward Classic is returning this summer (and is the NW Region Champs Meet as well). Nice to have them on the west coast twice in 3 years with Spokane in 2009 and this summer in Sacramento but would prefer the more mild climates of Seattle and Eugene for sure! I'll be in Sacramento but certainly hope they have the distance races at...

shoe fit and performance
Published (2009-12-24 04:51:00)
I am not sure if you are concerned about the fit or the weight? I have a pair, and they are very light at 3.5 oz for size 11.5 (I normally wear size 12). For the fit, I would say if I had gotten the size 12 instead of the 11.5, the spike plate might not have been positioned under the ball of my feet correctly, but I think I could have tightened them up enough to eliminate any slippage that might have occurred. I don't think that you would...

High jump questions
Published (2009-12-16 10:18:00)
Haven't jumped in over 7 years, but want to restart as I will be 60 in March. I have jumped with both the straddle and the flop techniques. When I was in college, I could jump 6'10" with three steps (straddle). I think that this would again be beneficial to me at this age as when I jumped with the flop 7 years ago, I found that the necessity for "speed" caused numerous injuries. Any suggestions?

Plan a very careful build-up of strength. Outside the weight room maybe, because the most stress in the high jump is for the joints and tendons. As you will jump lower than years back, tou spend loss time in the air and so all rotations have to be faster. This is technically quite difficult. It is not to say which technique is best for jumpers that age. I know both technically good straddlers and floppers among masters. And enjoy!

I think that the physics of running the curve and the risk of landing akwardly would make the flop more likely to trigger an injury. I think that maybe it's also possible to get into reasonable form a little quicker with the straddle brcause you can see what's happening instead of turning your back to the bar.

Hip replacement
Published (2009-12-22 19:32:00)
Has anyone out there been told they need a hip replacement? If so, I am curious to learn some of the details of your story. I am a 35-year old sprinter who has been competing basically continually since grade school. I have been having hip pain for the last two or three years. This past summer I finally went to get it checked. I have been to 5 different doctors. Four of them said I need a hip replacement - congenital arthritis in both hips...

shoe fit and performance
Published (2009-12-24 04:16:00)
I was checking out the new Nike Matumbo spikes and they state that the shoes run large by 1/2 size. but thqt got me thinking, would running in a shoe 1/2 size larger would it affect your performance much? When I skated many years ago, the rule of thumb that a 1 smaller then your regular shoe, you would skate better.

Interesting theory, but I'm not sure the science would support it. It sounds more like a recipe for injury than for producing gains in performance.
