Links were removed from the bottom of the post -- I can say with 100% certainty that this is simply a spammer or spam-bot reposting some text on Photoshop that they did not write themselves. My vote = ban 'em. Ban their whole IP.

iBook g3 stuck on starting mac os x

Really don't think its going to help. Even if iTunes is completely fouled up, the machine should essentially still boot because iTunes is not embedded in the system startup files. Sorry to say again but you are essentially SOL without installers to go further, and not just to possibly install the OS but also to check the integrity of the drive and file system.

DIMM1/J31 failure
Published (2009-11-26 10:28:00)
Sorry, my bad! The memory that you already have installed can be swapped between the slots. Another way to check out what's happening - is to remove one of your memory cards, and try the test. If that passes, move that memory card to the _other_ slot, and test again. If you again get a good test, install your second card in the now-empty slot, and test _again_. If you now get a failure, you know which card is bad, and which slot it is in....

Self teaching is frustrating but perhaps more rewarding. Netgear forums - good idea. I need teaching how to use my brain sometimes too.

You need to replace that memory stick, then try the memory test again.
Keep in mind that certain models of the G4 PowerBook had memory slot problems, and you may have one of those.

Instead of trying to clean up the previous owner's mess, why not simply use the Mac OS X Restore CD/DVD that was included with the computer to re-load the operating system (which wipes out any existing data and installs a clean, fresh and new copy of OS X), making the computer totally "yours?"

You can try to safe boot by holding the shift until it comes to the progress bar or a log in screen and see if it runs normally safe booted. Sometimes after a safe boot you will be able to start up normally because the safe boot will correct some issues with extensions or caches. But unfortunately without the install disks you are limited because there are some very useful utilities that come ...

Boot from a set of OS X install CDs/DVDs (hold 'c' as the computer starts up) and follow the on-screen prompts.

Should be no problem with that as Time Machine keeps all of its files inside the Backups.backupdb folder at the root of the disk. If you're still concerned, you could partition the external drive and have a separate partition for all those other files.

I might recommend making the jump all the way to 10.5.8. I have a G5 as well and it is running 10.5.8 perfectly.... Even better than when I had 10.4 on it.
Good Luck!
