I think you "can" swap anything. I just put an '89 i drivetrain + exhaust (southern car) in my '87 e car on Saturday, as swaps go it was as easy as it gets....
I'd contemplate swapping brakes all around (including rear subframe off the later car), drivetrain including trans and pedalbox, etc. It really depends on what you want.

E39 540i Fan Issue
The main fan (i.e. not the aux fan) on my '98 E39 540i has an issue. It is in pieces on my driveway, and coolant is dripping into a drain pan that I placed under the car.
