glass 3/4 wt fly rod

With a butt over tip rod, like the Eagle Claw Featherlight, the butt section has a much larger diameter than the tip. The larger diameter section is much stiffer as a result - the vast majority of the rod flex is in the tip section. The old Eagle Claw Featherlight has all the action in the tip, which starts to collapse with a long cast*. The butt section doesn't share the load very well. Some rodmakers, like Griggs, use graphite in the...

I disagree with Crusty. The Steffen 3/4 is perfect with a DT3! I think I prefer the DT3 over the WF4. LOL!

How not to ship a fly rod...

I agree with Corey. I use those triangular Priority Mail boxes too and haven't had any trouble. I think as long as the rod is braced inside its tube and the tube is wrapped with bubble wrap so that it fits tightly in the box you have done as much as you can. Now it's up to the shipping gods. Frankly, I worry that a round tube will roll off and be run over. Also, those PVC tubes can be really heavy so when they are thrown like a...

If so, I'm curious what you think of how they compare? when I drove down to Phil's shop last May, I test-cast: 6'3", 6'8", and 7'0" looking for a rod that was nice with a DT4. The 6'8" felt best, IMO. I also cast the 7'6" and 8'0" looking for a DT5 rod, and the...

I would certainly agree, you will find that the correct rod tube and perhaps even the hang tags on another period rod will come up on Ebay from time to time for peanuts, (under $100 with a fly rod in boot) if the tube and tages are your period they would certainly increase your rods value by more than you would spend for them, at least they should based on honest auctions. Post away, I have a few collectables so will try to help, your Conolon...

LeoCreek-I've got a buccaneer 7 ft. 5 piece 6 wt. that doesn't feel to bad. I haven't fished with it yet but I guess I'm going to one of these
days.I don't think it had a lot of use because there is still a lot of space on the ferrules. It was also cheap. One rod I really like is an old Daiwa 8 ft.
and I think a 6 wt.It is from around 1970 and it casts a lot better than I ever expected it to. It ...

I make sure they get put up clean and dry--any where between a rinse and wipe with an old t-shirt. Beyond that, I check the wraps--usually when I first get
a venerable rod and from time to time thereafter--and I don't hesitate to nourish the varnish on the wraps with a bit of thinned spar. This can really
improve appearance as well as maintaining the wrap.
If you want, clean the cork and ...

Those are " hand made?" Wow.
The paint is awesome as well as the general overall appearance and apparant craftsmanship.
Could you tell us the process you go through to make these?

I am cheap too, but not as old fashion. I use the Danvise(Some Plastic
Parts really puts many people off). A folding TV Tray converted to a tying
desk is what I use for travel tying.

tough one to place....
not familiar w/ the size... is it a "retro" or a true vintage model??
there's two ways to look at this type of rod...
1) it's sort of a novelty and likely few were produced so it may bring a premium esp. if in exc. condition
2) it's not a terribly practical rod so may bring less as a " fishing rod" (compared to a 7' 4wt. or 7'6" 4wt. or 8' 4wt/5wt)
3) it ...

easiest, cheapest and quickest would be to fill the gap with gorilla glue, sand it down and call it good.
Or... remove the guides, replace the cork/grip, re-wrap.
I've never done this... but I bet you could cut away the damaged ring and replace it with a ring that was cut in half and glued/clamped in place.

Good Evening Greg,
Well first off let me say that the rod that Tom picked up in the above link is sort of a misnomer, in that it carries a cork grip protector from the old Narmco
Conolon Plant in Coasta Mesa California. This facility was moved in December 1960 to a brand new plant in Santa Ana California. At the time of the move, the
Narmco Conolon rod Company was spun off of Narmco Research (...

Everyone will have preferences with this, but one way:
1) pieces from an old glass rod - larger taper inserted in the blank,
2) perhaps 1-1.25 inches,
3) I like duct tape,
4)wrap the tape on evenly - roll the blank and eyeball if straight - then mark it in place before final glue,
5) dunno...

8-foot 6-weight Hardy JET is my current fantasy fly rod. I don't have one, but one day I will. You could add to that an Orvis 8-foot 6-weight 2-piece
Golden Eagle. I've been collecting 8-foot rods for a while and have a pretty good representative sample of a dozen or so in the 5/6/7 weight categories of
both new and old glass, but these two have evaded my Pay Pal account thus far.
My ultimate...

Although I don't always have choice by way of rod make, I like the look of the unsanded blank. Some of my older Orvis graphite rods were made this way.
Older Wonderods I think were made this way too. I don't know if they ever changed to sanding them.

Truly awesome, Keith!
Other than a few juvenile bull trout in recent years, it's been a long time since I had the chance to catch any sizeable bulls. It's nice to see they
are still going strong in your drainage!
Thanks for the great photos (and flashback!).

thats nasty I really hate it. I got a rod in not too long ago in one of
those triangle tubes for priority mail; the box was actually ripped in half
with half the rod parts sticking out, but by a stroke of luck, nothing was
banged or broken; I think a fork lift got yours!!!!!-p-

Coming up next is a comparison between a vintage, mint dutch Remco and a danish one. There are som small differences, as you can see. The clicker knob is made
in rubber on the danish one (the golden/silver one), but on the dutch one there is no possibility to turn it on or off.
The dutch one was made by hand, something you can see if you look close. I love those small details, traces of...
