i went to college for Management Information Systems. I read books and magazines on recording. I bought some gear (totaling a fraction of tuition) and learned on my own. after college I got an unpaid internship at Chicago Recording Company for my true "education' after 3 months, I was in sessions with ColdPlay, Ice Cube, Kanye and Twista. I suggest getting a real degree, one that you can use to pay bills, as you go thru life as a...

I think people could do a little better than to rant, but I find the apologism even worse. As a community we should set high standards, just not do it in an elitist way that makes us out of touch. That's the middle ground in these threads that isn't often discussed.

Dj List Music (Picture)
Published (2009-11-07 09:36:00)
I use iTunes to manage my music, mostly via the smart playlists. I will give each track a new genre or genres to assign it to one or multiple playlists where I would expect the music to be played/fit well together. For example, a Nu Disco track that is a bit " indie" gets in the Nu Disco and Indie dance lists. If it was a bit deep, it would get in the Nu Disco and Deep House lists. Within Traktor, I will sort by a variety of...

I remember a few house tracks that sampled that. Click to open in a new window Click to open in a new window As for legality, I would only think that applies if you plan on selling whatever you're making. If you're just going to use it in a mix or a track for fun, then just go with it.

Right on! I am falling in love with vinyl again too. And I must say, it has done wonders for my sets because with vinyl, I actually take the time to listen to each track completely, multiple times. I love just sitting down with my phones on, listening to a track whilst looking at the cover art or reading the liner notes, etc.

Honestly never. It's a strike when the iron is hot situation, and I'm
always there past closing time, and the girl's gone. I guess the whole bit
of being a DJ as part of my identity may have helped my game in general,
but I don't think it was ever close to a deal-making factor. Now that I'm
starting to do guest spots though it's probably easier to pull. No stories
yet.

I hope you enjoy it but as a professional, I say NO NO NOOOOOOO. I just saw this thing and to me it is another example of our profession, lifestyle being trivialized. I mean first there was the damn iPod mixer and now this. If it introduces more people and educates/produces more good DJs then I will eat these words gladly with hot sauce, but they've got some guy playing to a full stadium with ...

alot of people mix on thier computers. i can do both. does it make somebody less because they can only use a computer? do they perform for people?
now if they are auto syncing the whole thing, i see it as a bit of cheating. but then again being able to beatmatch is not a mandatory skill.
what do you use? i kinda sense some jealousy in your post...

As long as you're making people enjoy the music you play, you're a DJ. Doesn't matter how you do it or how much you "cheat", as long as it's not a pre-recorded set.
And it's fine to drink. Just don't overdo it. A few beers doesn't kill your skills. A few beers to many, however..
