Fences at Gettysburg
Published (2009-11-19 15:04:00)
Had the fences been along Seminary and Cemetery ridges, they would have been long gone, but nobody was making camp in the flats between. From my reading, there were three kinds of fences separating different fields. You mentioned split-rail, sometimes called the snake fence. A fair-sized hog or a man can tumble those in an instant. Then there's the post and rail, such as has been portrayed in movies and such documentaries as the subject...

Oh, there was definitely sectionalism in the North. A lot of people think that the whole North wanted slavery gone. Not true. Some of the Northerners put up with slavery and didn't even mind it one bit. The only thing they cared about was the Union. There were fights between Abolitionists and the other Northerners simply because they didn't all have the same views.

[quote=Lefty;155878]The E-burg Road wasn't a pike. Pikes were toll roads and considered all weather roads due to being somewhat macadamized for good drainage. Of the 10 major roads (+ 1 railroad) leading into Gettysburg, only 3, York, Chambersburg/Cashtown and Baltimore were considered Pikes. quote] The NPS calls it a pike, which, as we all know, is short for turnpike or a toll road. Here is an NPS site which quotes Kershaw who calls it...

I have a hard time believing the part about Davis and his cabinet intending to go along for the ride. Or am I supposed to have a hard time believing any of it? I'm not sure what to think.

Getting back to the Durney post, in Point #2 he claims that slavery "was the most visible difference between the two sections but it was not the only difference." Yeah, they had different accents, too. Durney claims, "The South lost national influence in the years leading up to the war. This coupled with the differences between agricultural and industrial economies created tensions that led to war." Here he...

K Hale: The problem is, it was a rather bad spectular failure. I do not agree with Sears that he did not "chicken out". Plain and simple, Hooker expected Lee to fly - and when he didn't, reacted defensively. Now, his performance other than that (and the pre-Gettysburg manuevers - after studying the issue of troops in the Eastern Theater, Hooker thinking Halleck is holding out on him is at best unfair and at worst...

As already noted, Lincoln's relationship to the interpretation of the Constitution was the same as all other Presidents; he used the inherent flexibility of the Constitution, itself, to forward the goals, he wished to accomplish. Unlike Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln did not have to go against his own principle's or political beliefs, in order to do, Constitutionally, what he considered necessary in furthering the national interest.

Does he mean the fence on the Emmitsburg Road? The Confederates had to climb over that during the charge. At the 145th reenactment, this came up, too. Some guy in the audience during one of the presentations stood up and said the Confederates ought to have taken down the fence on the Emmitsburg Road the night before the charge. He said he had seen this on the History Channel. He kept ...

Considering that previous generations of Knoxville folks have so ignored historic sites in their midst that Ft. Sanders itself has disappeared, it is remarkable that UT has paid any attention to this site. My hat's off to the person(s) who came up with this ides.
Otherwise, Bleak House, Confederate Gen. Longstreet's headquarters during the battle, has been preserved and some effort has been ...

Many examples exist and I'm sure all of them will be posted here.
One that comes to mind is a Harriet Tubman state park here in Maryland. But the powers to be are seeking public opinion to verify if she is worthy enough.... I personally don't think she is.... others will disagree. If you have to ask.... then she isn't. So.... who is left to be worthy of such an honor?

I think I've seen the book you're talking about advertised on Amazon or B & N., but I don't think I've even read a review of it.
There's not much question that people in the 19th century were quite religious with a strong belief in God. However, I think that much of what people did and still do with the Bible is pick and choose the things that reinforce their own preconceived notions and ...

To me it's like deciding whether to watch a Liberal or Conservative slanted news source. You can learn from both views but must decide on your on what to believe.
I read Lost Cause and other types of biased history because they all include bits of truth.
I also know that people write books to make money and if the book doesn't have a new slant on history, it won't sell.
My mom always ...

Too funny, Lee!
I work in a medical clinic. Part of my job is to review each patient's medications at each office visit.
The husband was the patient, his wife had brought all of his medications with them and we began to review them.
I came across a bottle of pills with the wife's name on the bottle.
Handing the bottle to her, I said, "This appears to be your medicine." I handed...
