How about a semi-professional recorder, like Zoom , Edirol , M-Audio , Sony , etc? Those have inputs, VU meters, and some have removable batteries.

True. For expandability either a D2 or a Fuze. The D2 wasn't stellar with aac files - I know that, but don't know whether they improved this in the D2+.

A good friend of mine has had the Edirol well over a year now and he loves it, sure it's expensive but worth it according to him.

How much is the Fuze there? I bought a Fuze, Clip+, and Clip, but was considering buying a D2 or D2+, an i7, or perhaps a Sony or Samsung player. What drew me to the Fuze was its handling of podcasts(seperated from the music, having autobookmarking, and support for low bitrate files), as well as the card slot. The i7 intrigued me due to its extra long battery life. For me getting an 8 GB i7 would have been too limiting due to the lack of a...

I can’t imagine that the Cowon S9 or the D2 need an amp to improve your phones, ohms wise they seem they work great with those two DAP’s, unless you find one of them overly sensitive. You can take a look at a brief post I wrote: “ What Can Portable Amps Accomplish ,”
- Phonak Audéo PFE Impedance: 32 Ohm
- Grado SR125i Impedance: 32 Ohm
- ATHM50 Impedance: 38 ohms

Reload the firmware. If that doesn't solve the problem, then it is a hardware problem, and you should get it replaced under the manufacturer's warranty if it is less than a year old.

My prediction is that if you ABX both rips, you will not notice too much of a difference.

I think any player that supports MP3's (Basically all of them) could/should support 320kbps VBR MP3's.
As for 32GB's players you could look at the Cowon S9, Samsung P3 (I think), Sony X-1000. There's probably some more out there but I can't think of any at the moment....
BTW How do you have 320kbps VBR's?

I purchased the 32GB S9 last summer with the expectation of destroying it with Linux in less than a week. Despite my best efforts I wasn't able to do it and it's still perfectly reliable. The only trick I had to do was format it with mkfs.vfat in Linux. Since then I've filled it up and probably sent 50GB through it.
I have been careful not to unplug it from the machine until the file system is...
