Rundown of arcane classes (I play 4e, so this is all IIRC)
1- Bard - Not your traditional arcane class, more of a warrior feel to it. Master of archaic lore, and party buffs. Pretty underpowered unless you put a lot of work into optimizing it.
2-
Sorcerer- A lot of people will suggest you do it. Personally I recomend against, and consider it the hardest arcane class to play. You get X...

I'll start simple. How about a world in which magic is not common but not rare either, and evidence has been found of
the world before a long ago apocalypse. This previous world was very high-tech though they couldn't use magic and now people use either.
Example: One Fighter might use a laser sword or anti-matter cannon, while another might use a flaming sword or a bow that fires arrow ...
