Anybody Growing Negroamaro?
Published (2009-11-15 12:50:00)
QUOTE (Abraxas @ Nov 15 2009, 06:39 AM) Am putting in Mediterrean grapes that do well in our heat. Accordingly Aglianico is on the way (3,200 heat units). Any one had experience with Aglianico or Negroamaro? I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on that one too. Thanks I'm growing Aglianico in a small block and the grape is getting some traction in California. The vines are disease (PM) prone in our climate. You would...

Deer Season In Ohio
Published (2009-11-13 20:49:00)
Actually, it's primarily not an Auction but a Produce Auction Managers' Annual Meeting. Ideas get shared and classes taught, speakers speak. There WILL be a small Auction during the event, probably after noon. Auctioneers from each of the Produce Auctions sell a few things each, and the money goes to a local charity. The last one of these meetings I went to was in Indiana and there were probably well over 1,000 Amish there. Our...

QUOTE (Falconite @ Nov 14 2009, 04:07 PM) Hi everyone, my name is David. I am 39 yrs old and a do it yourself kind of a guy. I am self employed in concrete construction. I have been thinking about making my own wine for several years. Right now I am 4 weeks into a 5 gallon batch of persimmon wine and 2 weeks into a 1 gallon batch of banana wine. Starting this spring I am going to plant an orchard and a vineyard. I just...

Stripping Oak From New Barrel
Published (2009-11-12 23:14:00)
QUOTE (Michael A @ Nov 12 2009, 08:34 PM) Your first in the barrel is a Petite Sirah??? Then don't worry about the oak. Petite's can soak up ALOT of oak without showing it. I surprised that's your experience. Mine is sort of counter logic in that I found Petite to take up too much oak fairly quick. I even oak Pinot more than Petite.

These are the labels I use also. I also buy the larger quanity for the savings. The labels come off very easily when soaked in the sink, actually you may find some of them floating after just a half hour. You will not be dissapointed. I evan picked up some clear labels yesterday when I was there to experiment with.

I usually don't check for MLF completion until all the bubbles stop for at least a week or two. If you are still seeing bubbles, it is either alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation, or much less likely, CO2 outgassing. If it were my wine, I would wait until all activity stops for a week or two, then sulfite.

Being from NH originally, I can attest to your temperature extremes from winter to summer. (We'll actually be back there next week visiting family over Thanksgiving.) Your winter temperature is great. You have the same problem I do with the the summer temperature. For the majority of the year the ground temperature keeps our insulated cellar space between 50-55 degrees. We do have an AC ...

[quote >Removed bag of berries, skins and 'nanas. Next time, will leave grapes out of bag to stay in primary longer. Elderberry must be in bag; remove before seeds become bitter. When you buy the filter packs at the brew shop, they normally come in packs of 3. I don't know why yours came with packs of 10. Maybe it's the hot dog and bun thing? ( hotdogs come in packs of 10, while buns come in packs of 8) The wine doesn't pass through each filter progressively, but rather is divided up and goes through all the pads simultaneously. So it's important to use 3 pads of ...

It's a good photo, but it's still a little difficult to gauge cork quality from a photo alone. For 3-5 years of aging, I don't think I'd have a problem with any of those, except the agglomerated cork. The only corks I avoid using are those that have visible fissures running the entire length, or that have chunks missing out of them. And I also inspect each cork. If one end has fewer ...

I don't have a scientific answer for you, but I've always heard that aluminum is a bad choice for anything acidic. As a turkey fryer, it's not such an issue because the aluminum would be fairly stable in oil for the short time used. But as a primary, you'd have the aluminum in contact with an acidic liquid for extended periods. May not be good. I wonder if the inside of your fryer is ...

Another option besides Surflan as a pre-emergent is "Prowl H2O", which can be applied in vineyards with both bearing, and non-bearing vines. I used it this year, both in areas of mature vines and in areas of new vines with grow tubes on them. It worked wonderfully. I recommend it (as much as I can based on one season of experience). The glyphosate that I use is "Honcho", which was less...

My avatar years back was of me with a deer hanging... I wonder if I instigated the fallout? It's a shame people can't just see things for what they are. Spendy, but you can degass with it, and I think you can rack with it. It also comes with a two nozzle option, but the cost shoots up to over $900 for that. -Bret...

Would you add a thermostat as a fail-safe to make sure it does not get too warm? Otherwise it looks like a brew belt, only larger.
