No comment on Leki poles. My standard advice is to check out PacerPoles. Switched from traditional straight poles about 4 years ago, will not go back.
Unique design is much more comfortable for all-day hiking, keeps your wrist in a more natural position. Plus it does not rely on your wrist and strap to transfer force. Excellent for downhill, uphill, and level hiking alike. Easier to ...

I always keep my pack in food in my tent; given enough rain it can get wet
in the vestibule and bugs are an issue.

You need to leave some gap along the bottom for ventelation. I'm more concerned about crawly things though - spiders, ticks, ants, beetles, etc. So, I always used a bug bivy with the cape.
It turns out that with the bug bivy, there is no weight or volume savings over using a tent like the Lunar solo and the tent has more room in it, so ...

There are any number of things that hikers smoke that may not necessarily be tobacco.
I suspect that you may have run into hikers smoking clove or flavored cigarettes, which up until legislation restricting their sale, have become very popular with young people in recent years.

I don't think this is an issue that needs to be worried about on the A.T.
and what's more, I don't think blatantly political threqads such as this
belong here.

(now this may have changed since '07) But I was concerned about the tenting available near Hanover - we noticed when we were there back in '07 interesting characters who had pitched their tents just in the woods there (one guy looked like he had been there quite a while). It made me uneasy hiking in this area, let alone staying there if I ever wanted to. Are there patrols for this or maybe ...

Well, good of you to report it anyway, it was the right thing to do.
And if anyone else finds themselves in a similar position (i.e. non-co-operation from local officials), consider calling the ATC in Harpers Ferry. They will immediately report the problem to the law enforcement officer in charge of the Trail for the Park Service (he's based in Harpers) who will in turn get on the phone and...

Most of the time you would be fine with a good guidebook. The unexpected is where a map can become necessary(snow, injury, lightening).
Some people are very verbal and prefer worded directions for stuff like mountains, crossing trails, water sources, distances, and towns. Some are more visual and like to know what is around them and the topograghy. Profiles used to just be on maps but are ...

carry. don't carry. I couldn't care less. But I feel it's just useless
weight to be carried by paranoid people who are safer on the trail than any
major city in the U.S. or by the testosterone boys needing to compensate
for other shortcomings. As i said, I don't care if anyone packs heat or
not, but announcing it seems a little stupid to me. IMO. Is this supposed
to be a humor thread?

I have seen people leave the Trail every year because of an insufficiency of funds and it's always sad.
Or as an alternative, I've seen people fall weeks behind their Trailfriends because they needed to take time off and work for awhile.
And lastly, every year there are folks who attempt to finish the Trail on virtually no money......the eat horribly, they live out of hiker boxes on ...
