It is a tedious bit of work to adjust the valves. Getting rid of the pair valve tubes helped me a lot. Another thing that helps me a lot is to get everything apart and ready to adjust but put off adjusting until the next day (since you have to let the engine cool overnight anyway). Does the upper part of the motor almost sound like an angry sewing machine when it's idling? If you can't hear the valves, that's bad. 18k is quite a few miles to go without an adjustment. Personally.. I'd get them checked/adjusted...

Goo Gone. You can buy it in any hardware store. After you remove the sticker wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol. Let dry. Wax the entire tank.
