You're welcome, Greeny ~ as you can tell, this has become a real passion for me ~ most people don't realize how complex public education really is ~ I'm also doing a bit of volunteer work with a group chaired by one of our board members to revamp public school funding ~ since Illinois uses "locational" property taxes, the more upscale areas get far more funding than the inner city ~ last year, there was a...

thanks for posting this, g. i first got interested in mr Kohn back in the 90's when he wrote an article on Reward and Creativity for the Atlantic Monthly- where he laid out the case that extrinsic reward is adversarial to creative endeavors. in other words, the more that some tangible goal is part of a creative endeavor, the less creative a person becomes. reading the work of contemporary philosophers, most of them believe that...

Where did you get two sermons.. he was selling an entire DVD with that crap on it, and he did not make any excuses. Only Obama did.. go to this site to see ABC'ds NOT FOX news report on it! .. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/DemocraticDebate/story?id=4443788&page=1 An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons , offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his...

And I don't remember me saying Obama didn't have a clue. Rev Wright is one man. Do you agree with everything your preacher says? I know I never did and to this day don't. I have had conversations with mine about the things that we didn't agree on. But a lot that I did. And the preacher isn't the church, the members are. What's more, when you take the two comments that are most used to denounce him in context I...

Yes, I'm bragging ~

Wow! How wonderful! And definitely worth bragging rights. I didn't know you were involved in such a project, but it's wonderful to hear it is so successful! And, yes, sadly, I can appreciate the tensions you're experiencing with the teacher's union. It seems they try far too hard to defend even the most incompetent teacher, and to threaten them with competence wreaks all sorts of threats. Keep up the great work!

"look kids from this particular economic strata and neighbourhood culture tend to commit more murders. What can we do to fix that?" Not a chance in hell to get elected in Florida with that mindset. We're still doing the "get tough on crime" dance and it seems to impress Florida voters again and again.

Sooz, you remarked earlier that you saw teachers' unions as an obstacle or adversary to your school's efftorts. Could you elaborate on that?

Good God, now Alaska is across the street from Russia. It would be funny if
it wasnt so scary how uninformed but decisive these people were. They cant
even define the issues from their fox news watching.

Empathy is fickle among a middle class that's a taste of the lifestyle they foisted on the less-fortunate when times were good. How long after things turn
around and we start hearing about "my tax money paying for those lazy bums milking the system" again?

No, because when you look at the Obama budget for FY 2010 (which started October 1) he proposed $3.591 trillion in spending, as opposed to approximately $3.6
trillion in actual spending (including war costs) for FY2009 when all was said and done. So spending is going to be about flat versus FY 2009, because TARP
has essentially ended. But the total is proposed to be about $800 billion more than...

Excellent article.
I need to find more George Lakoff. His "framing the issues" speeches really are right on. So is this article.

With the exception of life itself, there is no greater gift than a meaningful education.
