1963 radio speakers
Published (2009-11-09 17:16:00)
Hey Greg - when I put in new speakers I used dual-cone units and made 'em big = 6x9 for both. Not sure, but I think they were about $40.00 each. Only problem is the rear 6x9 forces the spare a tad out of its hole so the hold down screw does not align. I may reposition it a bit, if I can, if the holes allow without modifying the deck. I'm working on putting in a '63 FM radio in now. so if your shop can sketch out what they do to...

Greg, Hopefully you are all "hunkered down" for Ida! National Weather Map still showing her going right up Mobile Bay! Talked to a friend that is over in Pascagoula earlier tonight (he has a 2002 T'Bird and a 55 ft. cabin cruiser to worry about) and he said that hopefully she was goining to be pretty well blown out by the time she got to you guys! GOOD LUCK!! texastomeh

Eaton PS Pump

I'm guessing that you have a 64 or 65 Bird, which had a different style bracket and reservoir from 61 - 63, although the pumps are the same. The Ebay pump bracket and reservoir you bought is 61-63 style. In 64, the shape of the bracket was changed, and rubber bushings were inserted in the bracket mounting holes of both the bracket and the reservoir. Simply reuse the bracket, reservoir, and pulley from your present set-up with your new...

After a very quick inspection I believe my 63 AM/FM has the fader. The large diameter ring turns independently of the smaller tuning knob and it feels like there is a locating indent in the exact center of the left to right rotation which I presume to indicate equal level of volume to front and rear. Will have to pull the speaker and check into this further.

Matt, love those pics! Brought back some fond memories. I had mine rebuilt by a reputable FE guy in Hudsonville Mi (CD's Engine Service) and used the Comp cams X-treme energy cam, springs, timing set and pushrods as well. Due to dwindling funds I stuck with the original heads and new valves. My 390 was overbored .030 (makes it a 396 but I don't tell the chevy guys that ) I just bought new rocker shafts and arms and will order solid...

I'm currently in the process of replacing the driver's floor in a '64. I have it cut out and the new floor shaped/flanged and ready to install. I'll take some pictures of the area tomorrow and post them to a new page on my site.

If they did, there would have been people installing them and bragging about it when they were new! And there would have been articles in the Scoop about installing them back in the '70s and '80s.
In other words, no - they won't, not without MAJOR surgery to the spring/shock towers, reconfiguring steering linkage/mounting, ad infiniutm.

The harness for '63 is different from '61-62: fuse box and firewall bulkhead connections are two primary ones. '63 had a factory-optional rear seat speaker, and the 5-plug connector allowed for rear speaker/built-in fader connection from the radio. Two 4-prong plugs on the radio suggest that one plug may be related to a rear seat speaker and the fader. The particulars as to what wires went where...

Congrats, Greg, that's got to be a good feeling, coming down to the wire like that!
As for the speakers - outside of finding the correct fitment - that's a bit subjective. I'd highly recommend running down to a car audio shop and listening for yourself; people tend to have different tastes and different "ears" for music and the way it sounds - highs, lows, mid-range punch, etc. As with ...

Your gonna have to find a bracket that will accomodate whatever generator you use. I have a GM(Yes, I know! Blasphemy!!!) alternator in my car. The rest is pretty much textbook as far as hooking it up.
You can chuck the gen regulator as you won't need that anymore.

THAT is one of the craziest/goofiest/smartest/neatest/most brilliant/coolest/most innovative things I have EVER seen!!!
If you are not careful, you are going to get the reputation of "figgering" out ways of doing things like a "hotrodder".

I know that the 65,66 disc brake setup will work on our cars- someone told me that the 67 will work as well. I figured that with the body change in 67, all else had changed as well. But he stated that in 67, some parts were carried over from 66, and suspension wise, the 68 was all new.
Anyone here used the 67 brakes?
Thanks
Jim

What you're seeing is a piece of black vinyl push-on welting/windlacing, like what's used in the door jambs. It is available new. You should be able to get a short length of it from a T-bird or Mustang parts vendor, or check with an upholstery shop for a remnant piece.

I used to have a friend that owned a cream colored '65. I remember having a party and he and his crew rolling up while we were in the front yard BBQing! The car looked awesome especially with 6 guys in it which lowered the car! From that point I decided I wanted a T-Bird. At the time I had a '61 Impala bubble top so I kind of put the thoughts of owning a 'Bird away but one morning I came out ...

Yep, I drove them all and the Chevy stood out. You can't beat the Duramax/Allison combo for towing. You can hardly tell that there's 9,000 lbs. back there - unless you look at the fuel gauge. Mileage drops to 11.8 with the tow load from 16 city, 22 highway without the ...
