Something like the Wild Things shelter is good winter emergency gear to have available. I don't spend that much time on the summit, though, too cold and windy usually. I'd prefer to experience the summit and then descend to a more secluded dining experience.

While I think a grand or two should be plently, I can't say the story "nailed it" Going up Tucks' in April when you are likely to see a carnival of people is not the same as a Presi-traverse & that's what I think of when the author is telling us his personal experience. Very interesting stuff...thanks for the links! Found another one in same area. This one died well before the hunt. His antlers are well polished so he died no earlier than September, but he died well before the hunt. I'm not knowledgable enough to know if he died this or last autumn, but there was a bit of red flesh on a neck bone. Understand, I'm not a conspiracy wacko type. I'm not proposing that coyotes are taking healthy...

If NH is spending $6,000,000 annually to carefully cultivate an image of their state being a fun and safe place to bring your family, one would think they would realize that negative publicity is like shooting a big hole in that image. Money which actually is coming out of taxpayer pockets, yet you don't hear many people screaming about how much of their tax dollar is being spent on making people come here in the first place . Why?...

I'm not a fan of rescue recoupment laws. But putting aside the larger debate, does it make sense to apply these laws to minors? The rationale for recoupment is that hikers will behave more responsibly if they know they might bear the cost of a rescue. The brains of adolescents are not fully developed. Minors (especially boys) engage in reckless behavior because they often fail to perceive the ...

I need to educate myself about windfarms since proposals may start popping up in my area soon. I've read an earlier thread in which proponents praise them as a "green" initiative, however flawed, and opponents argue that they'll be white elephants soon enough, aren't worth the high elevation habitat destruction, and are being constructed by those hungry for government subsidies. Is there any ...

The bridges were damaged by flooding last year, and apparently are finally being repaired. I saw the large backhoe parked there a couple weeks ago. I'm surprised you didn't use the ME Cutoff coming down from Garfield which would save you a mile in normal circumstances and perhaps even more on your trip. Another solution to your problem would be to get a real GPS with a map ...
