New fangled footware, really wierd

Me, too, Gaiagirl. They look wicked strange and that's what appeals to me most. I imagine how they could be comfortable (with socks???) but wonder how hard it is to get all the little piggies into their own little sleeves?

Orange doggie vests
Published (2009-11-06 18:53:00)
I've got a nylon one, full chest and back, nylon zipper and velcro tabs to adjust fit, slightly worn but extremely servicable for a medium dog (maybe 40 to 65lbs) that I could send to someone here (in the US, so I don't need special paperwork) if they feel they would use it but may not want to pay for new right now. Send me a PM with your address and it'll be washed and overnighted Monday.

Trish, Just the right amount of snow on the trail and summit to give it that wintery feel. The views from Garfield are something you don't want to miss second time around. Glad to see that you and Alex are, once again, on the trails. Good recovery! Donna

Fir and Big Indian - 11/8/9
Published (2009-11-08 20:57:00)
I took a group of 11 up Fir and Big Indian, starting from Biscuit Brook, up to Fir and over to Indian Head. Laurie is recovering from being sick, so she stayed home. I was a little apprehensive bushwhacking w/o her, but it turned out fine. It was a great group, consisting of a few people I'd met before, and several that were new. Interestingly, we had to turn several people away from this hike, as 20 people signed up for it! We left BB PA...

Lake Champlain Bridge closed
Published (2009-11-07 21:56:00)
This story got picked up on National NPR, and the story mostly focused on the lady who owns the restaurant at the end of the bridge on the VT. Apparently the emergency plan is to expand the Champlain Ferry, and use their big ice-breaker to make sure the channel stays open. From the news story, the failure of the bridge was abrupt - while inspected regularly, it quickly deteriorated to the point of being unsafe. Both states were caught...

And, for me, I like having the option, too, of using the Zealand/Carter Notch/Lonesome Lake huts in the off-season.

But what if you willingly fed the bear? Then it's not like he/she stole it. Does that still count?

Ridiculous...Unfortunately, an idiot is born every minute.
Disregard for other people's time and energy really pisses me off.
Too many of these "wolf criers" and SAR won't respond at all!

I'm sure we will be there, but will head home earlier than usual, I'm running the SeaCoast half on Sunday!
It will be a great opportunity to carbo load on Pat's famous garlic toast crispies!

Probably too late to help you but we got turned back on Mt. Success Saturday just below the summit. The Mahoosuc Trail between the Mt. Success trail junction and the summit had patches of ice that increasingly became just ice, no rock coming through as we approached the summit. Microspikes would have allowed us to make the summit. Anything more would have been overkill.
Mt. Success trail ...

I have a vague recollection that the object is first knitted and THEN boiled. I think the wool shrinks a bit, so it has to be made oversized. Something tells me that miraculous tool, Google, might be of help here.

You won't have any trouble. Giant trailhead parking sign on the Franconia parkway, which will get to to the lot. From the lot, the path is paved up from the parking lot... and after passing the restrooms it splits.... right for Falling Waters, left for OBP. Can't miss it.

Reluctantly, after a nice nap in the warm sun, I descended toward the Bolles Trail through thick beech. Here's a pretty mushroom crowd growing on a beech log.
I emerged on the Bolles snowmobile Trail and decided to take that down, allowing the bushwack to sort-of continue. This end of trail almost never sees snowmobiles. I've never seen a track and it doesn't appear to ...
