Hi! No problem... I was on the right track anyway. Indeed, it was one of the water pumps (original - '95 w/120 k miles) with a PLASTIC impeller. Hopefully this one will last another 120k !!! Thanks for your interest! Have a good weekend...

Intermittent OVERHEATING on e34...
Published (2009-11-06 11:53:00)
Wow, one lucky fella! When mine went, it was a sudden, catastrophic failure, while driving on the highway. No hint whatsoever of impending doom, the temp gauge went off to the red zone and that was it, off to the shoulder of the road, cut the engine, and a call for a tow. Fortunately no engine damage. That's one reason why I felt I couldn't give an intelligible reply to your initial posting, the symptoms you described didn't...

Intermittent problems can be a real pain in the butt. You could have had a vapor lock in the fuel line, intermittent no signal from the crank sensor. PCM might be dying. Without it doing the thing and being tested on the spot all you're going to do is shot gun it and throw parts at it until it stops doing it......if it even ever does it again. The list is as long as I am tall 6'9" where do you ...

Mine does EXACTLY the same thing. When it does it I notice the check engine light stays lit while cranking indicating the absence of a crank signal. I now park in a heated garage eliminating the issue, but I will be getting my butt under the car soon to replace and reset the airgap on it (my suspicion is when the temp drops enough, the gap opens to big. Gets warmer, gap closes, signal returns)

Usually just a trim tool and about 20 minutes worth of time, the trick is to not exert excessive force on the parts you aren't replacing. The plug on the back usually has a sliding section that unplugs the pins (when slid in one direction), and then replugs the new bit in (when slid back).

Interior lights and radio don't really mean squat, they use very low amounts of power. Clicking while trying to start indicates low battery, generally not bad starter (that would be one loud clack with no engine movement).
New battery IS a good idea, also get the alternator checked. I'm not sure when the IBS made it's way onto the three's, but if equipped it could be getting dodgy (part of ...

Just needed more patience. The cooling system still had air in it. Once the car cooled, the expansion tank was completely empty. Refilled it, ran the car again, let it cool, filled the expansion tank again as it was half empty and now the temp gauge sits rock solid on the middle and the fan kicks in just like it should. Lesson learned: Refilling the cooling systems on these cars takes ...

When it bounces, is it the difference between moving and sitting stationary (slow sweep?) or is bouncing erratically (quick sweeps?). In the first case I'd look at the electric fan, relay, and sensor. In the second case I'd suspect the SI board is crapping out in the instrument cluster.

Could be a number of things but I'd start by checking for vacuum leaks, then move on to sensors, but that would require a scan tool.
