What DMM?

I'm another satisfied Fluke user. Mine is a 73 as seen in this thread:- http://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=42194 The protective case has saved it from damage several times. Whitegold meters aren't bad either, but Im not sure whether they're made anymore. I really can't recommend the cheap DMMs for serious work.

It's very different to the decks we British are used to, which are usually made by BSR, Garrard or Collaro. Frankly, yours looks a bit superior in many respects, but a little bit more awkward to service. The good news is that the basic method of operation is the same; when the end of the record is reached, a "trip pawl" on the "master cam" causes the master cam to mesh with the teeth attached to the...

Strange indeed. These are quite rare but do appear on occasions. I've never seen a single reference that gives a model name or number though. Maybe there's something printed on the tuning scale, not visible until the scale is removed? It has a suspiciously Dynatron look about it, so I wonder if they were made by that company for Derwent. Those knobs look very Roberts/Hacker/ Dynatron too; the tuning knob looking very Roberts R500 to...

There's a couple of diodes that can cause trouble. Check the one that goes to the O/P of the fuse, and the one that goes from the other end of that to deck. There's a cap 5C5 that may want a look. 400uF 25v. Check around 5VT1 and 5VT2. And the diodes there, both 1N4148. Try tweaking 5T1. Cheers, Steve P.

I have an EBL31 here that 'tings' in time with the audio but only if it is horizontal in a set. Probably just the grid bouncing about a bit. I wouldn't worry about it. The subject of the EBL(3)1 came up on the forum a short while back. If you wanted to prove one way or the other if the valve is faulty you can bodge an EL84 into the circuit using an old octal valve base, a B9A socket and a couple of germanium diodes (silicon...

Excellent thanks kalee, am I right to think that two windings in parallal are forced to have the same terminal voltage because they are connected to gether , ( forced balance). A circulating current flows which sets up a magnetic field that counters the field generating the higher of the winding voltages to achieve this balance. If this is so is it important to have the parallel connection of the windings in the right sense. Mike

I've come across a couple of these just lately, both on scopes strangely enough. First was on a Solartron CD1014 dual beam scope, one end of a 0.1uF decoupling cap was neatly hooked round a solder tag but hadn't been soldered. Whilst investigating an intermittant fault on a Dynamco 7100 scope today, I found one of the input attenuator resistors was only soldered at one end. Both of these scopes must have been like this all their...

I started with Betamax due to having an early Toshiba agency in 1972 till 2003. The first machines, the V5470B were fantastic. They were completely reliable and gave a very good picture. The machine was large but customers liked to see something for their money and it was a lot in 1977. The V8600 series were again good machines but a later model the V31B [I think] suffered rapid head and even worse, upper drum wear resulting in no rewind due...

You definitely need the middle 2 pins to the middle 2 pins. Preferably same way around, but it will work if they are swapped over. I've also seen some leads with the pair outside the middle connected to each other; but my ADSL router has only the middle two contacts populated. As Jeffrey says, though, you're probably best keeping the "phone" wiring as short as possible and extending the "network"...

Should be OK although 1v is a bit much (15%), it would be better to use the voltage drop at 2.5A for the known winding. An alternative, possibly more accurate method, would be to connect both secondaries in series and pass a DC current through them. Since resistance is inversely proportional to cross sectional area, and current rating directly proportional to cross sectional area, the ...

It's a case of "horses for courses" when it comes to meters. If you are repairing / restoring the odd domestic radio or television set or fixing vintage Hi-Fi then what you need is an AVO. That is the instrument used to record the voltages quoted in the vast majority of service manuals. A DMM might give misleading results as it will have a higher impedance (Ohms / Volt) and load the circuit...

Well, it might have worked when it was put away, but it might not be working now. Some parts, especially capacitors, will need to be changed. First, read and learn, Get good tools for the job and the service sheet. There will be a model number on it somewhere - the service sheet may well be up top there. One capacitor needs to be changed straight off - it's known as 'that capacitor' in ...

Hi Richard and welcome to the forum. It would be helpful to have the model number. Valved equipment suffers bad capacitors, especially coupling capacitors, ideally all the coupling capacitors should be replaced, there cant be that many of them. A check to ensure resistors are within tollerence is also a good idea. Switch cleaner on the volume and tone controls wouldn't go amiss either....

The prinsiple is right, the ringer in series with a capacitor. I have no experience with tuned ringer, witch only operates on (odd) frequencies. I would not believ it is a tuned ringer, but you vould test a little by hooking it up to a field telephone, and turn the crank faster and slower. Try with, and without capacitor. (Is the capacitor OK?). Why change everything inside the field ...

You're talking about the old 'Button A-B' telephones. The seperate black telephone you remember was basically a 162 (or 232, I forget now). The changeover took many years; the last 'Button A-B' type survived until relatively recently (Late 1980's?) in, I believe, the Shetland Isles. Although you haven't asked this, I thought it might be of interest to younger members if I were to explain ...

At a guess, an 8-track cartridge? As far as circuits go, I like the Mullard series - 3-3, 5-10 etc. The designs have stood the test of time and are easily adapted for stereo by doubling the channels and fitting either twin vol pots or a double gang control plus a balance pot. Many moons ago I built a seven watt stereo amp and a 3-3 stereo, both great performers, both based on designs in ...
