I have one just like that and it is a great player. From the appearance, it is well worth the hundred bucks. I think you will enjoy it a lot.

I'm reminded of the late Lew Waldeck's "Dog and Pony Show" for orchesta player representatives, where he told us that Symphony Societies are not in the business of providing music for audiences and jobs for musicians--they exist for the advancement of the fortunes of the Society members through social networking. Aloha!

First: work on lip flexibilities (lip slurs). This is easily done by simply doing bugle calls as high and as low as you can without using a lot of pressure. There will be at least 7 valve combinations: 0--123---13---23---12---1---2 After you work on those for a while (5 minutes per day for a couple of months) then learn how to do the second part. Using your hand to push the mouthpiece a little to cause the pitch to go to the next partial. The...

Specifications on instrument # Id 110 on HUC looks a lot like yours. As you probably know, Prototype was a model name used by Besson for some years and Brevete merely means "patented" in French and was a carryover from when the French company set up an operation in England. There was a recent thread on this subject. It was probably used for brass band or military band playing in the UK. Whether or not it is worth fixing up...

It's called a SHAKE, you shake the horn. Here is a clip of Mike Williams of the Basie band, sitting in for me while I danced with my wife. Watch him shake at the 13 second mark, and right around the 1 minute mark

I'm a ninth grader. Read my post about the Olds Ambassador for the braces thing. I will need to know what kind of bite you have (over/underbite). Do lip slurs and tune on the C inside the staff. Is it a Bb trumpet?

It sounds like people think your horn sounds bad because it isn't pretty, and they've convinced you to feel the same way. I've never played a Getzen Capri, but all the Getzen horns I've played have been very good, and I don't see why yours would be any different. If you really feel you NEED a different horn to fit in, you can probably find a pretty Olds Ambassador for less than $200.

What helped me? Knowing my scales and intervals. I see improvisation as branches that sprout from the melody. A good book that I use today to teach improvisation is the SPIT book. It supplies the branches for you.

Are now girls better trumpet players than us guys ? Recently, two new posts on TM remind us that, in this early 3rd millenium, women are getting the upper hand : "listen to this 5th grader", with a video that made The Dutch Guy (and others) jealous. "TenThing", an other beautiful video that also made jealous some "silly boys" (isn't this a redundancy, Flugelgirl ?). We have to...
