Warm-up Routine and the Stamp book.
Published (2009-11-22 19:59:00)
m13a8, slow down a bit. First of all a daily routine is a reality check. It needs no more than breathing exercizes, long tones, slurs and some basic articulation. By then you know what the rest of the day is going to be like. This can and should be a very compact, preferably memorized activity. Once you are through this then you add the things to get better as needed. I do not warm up and never really have. I use a hymnbook for lots of tunes,...

Trumpet Dilemma
Published (2009-11-22 20:14:00)
I ditched my Bach and bought a new trumpet. My playing is a thousand times better now. The new trumpet is only a small part of it. (I mean the actual item) Learning about the trumpet and the people associated with it and just wanting to play. It all went together to make me a better player and, I have way more fun playing now.

I think what worries most of these kids is "what if " , what if I crack ,forget to come in, play a wrong note etc. etc. They want to know how we can be calm before and during a performance. Of course experience is number one, they have to realize that if you do play a clam the roof isn't going to collapse, and that the world isn't going to end. Just be prepared and do the best you can do, and have fun at the concert.

For me, my articulation is best when I'm playing higher on the pitch. The first time I was ever able to articulate well was the same day a teacher told me to let the note float up to the top. I have a suspicion that maybe there is a feeling that you are losing your sense of security when you let the pitch float up causing you to subconsciously start trying to either manipulate the pitch back ...

Everyone is different (ie: different facial structure, different lung capacity, different embouchure, etc). There is no one mouthpiece that would work for everyone (which is a good thing). If a 7c works for you, that's all you need to focus on. Practice away.

I tried one of these once, which was labelled as 1 1/2 C, the kind of Bach MP I normally use. Did not feel much difference as far as embouchure and sound production, but the sound itself did not seem as rich and full. I am far from an expert and certainly lack vocabulary to describe sound, though. I imagine they must come in handy for these wintery marching band outings. I certainly wish I would...

Depends... were you auditioning for lead playing? If so you might get some credit. However if it's more of a symphonic setting you might get slated for it. Scales are weighted differently by everyone but I'd generally think the audition piece would be the deciding factor.

The word you want is "quarter" as in one forth. The music of the Middle East and Mediterranean use one forth steps between some notes. The forth valve has half the tubing length of the second valve on your trumpet. Miles Davis played quarter tones by half valving and used the quarter tone in his music. Jazz improvisation can sound very innovative using a quarter tone trumpet.

Ok, this may turn into a bucket of worms, but I'll give it a shot. first of all, the lips are sort of a generator, their movement gets the standing wave or resonance in the horn kickstarted and afterwards interact with the resonance to change its frequency or amplitude (ultimately the loudness that we percieve). There are 4 major forces that affect the lips: the muscle tension, the pressure ...

Ok, speak of the devil, the old 80A just got home from Andersons, new valve job, the replate was done around 1973, valves were wore out then. I got a little better picture of this one, but still trying to figure it out. She looks great to me and sounds ...
