if you ask me, the real problem in both cases is the organization's attitude towards people in general. Private corporations regard people pretty much the same way that farmers regard cows (i.e. as things that have value as individuals precisely to the extent that they can be milked), while government bureaucracies tend to peg your average citizens as somewhere between helpless idiots and a mindless irritants (e.g., as things that get in...

Migration Assistant I think first appeared in OS X 10.4. So, if it is not present in /Application or in /Applications/Utilities, I would suspect the eMac is running Panther (version 10.3). What exactly are you trying to migrate over?

You want to run (and look for) Migration Assistant on the new machine, which may involve joining the Macs by Firewire cable. As tlarkin points out, if the G5 is running Tiger or later, then it should be in /Applications/Utilities

Syncing playlists between Macs

That's not gonna do it (if that's even what the OP wants). Like any backup app, ChronoSync works at the file level... so yeah, for the scenario where the *entire* file is the level we're interested in, then it works. [in fact i use ChronoSync for that exact purpose.] But on the off-chance the OP meant what i mentioned in the 2nd part of my post, then no ordinary backup app will ever work. [too bad post #1 didn't express the...

To open X11, specify the full path:
open /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
Are you sure your X11 apps are up-to-date? The latest version of MacVim seems to be @7.2.snapshot50.
If you're using MacPorts, you may need to run:
sudo port selfupdate
sudo port upgrade installed

Code:
tell application "Finder"
tell folder "test2" of desktop
set pptFiles to every file whose name extension is "ppt"
repeat with thisFile in pptFiles
set name extension of thisFile to "pptx"
end repeat
end tell
end tell
I'm not sure what this will do, though - simple renaming the files as pptx will not make it a pptx file.

What type of program are you talking about?
Do you mean applications (programs with a GUI)? If so, logging out is not possible - but why log out? Why not just use " fast user switching"?

1) Why are you trying to implement your own "firewall" instead of using existing ones? Read 'man ipfw' for example.
2) ' launchd' is well documented:

Some people think we've already hit peak oil. I don't think so. I think that when that happens, and it will happen, there will be no way to keep it a secret. That's when the financial markets will really be in turmoil. We may look back on this period as a good time.

Holy s**t! I didn't realise that the healthcare reform was being actively sabotaged to that degree. If that thing passes, it'll be worse than the current situation. Well, for everyone but the insurance companies.

Tried using dscl in interactive mode?
try the following code, though please note you are running as root if you follow my instructions to a T.
Code:
sudo -s <input admin password>
dscl
cd LDAPv3/mydomain. odm.com/Groups
ls
That will list all of your groups, now to read members or attributes, while still in interactive mode, just use the read command.
read mygroup

That's not spying on you, that's the website trying to see how many visitors it has.
Website owners use it as a helpful tool to see what pages are popular, and find where people are getting stuck or leaving.
It's similar to (but more advanced that) those hit counter things.

the 'throttling respawn' line is more or less normal and expected, unless it's happening over and over. open activity monitor, wait until you get a freeze again, and see which process is consuming cycles.
it might be the aslmanager (if you have a corrupt log file or an app that's writing extensive error logs, that can get the aslmanager to be overactive). if that's the case, use Yasu (or ...

two things to try: add vv to the options - -rtvv - to get verbose output and see what rsync is doing
delete that echo line - on my machine that throws an 'event not found' error. not sure what that mess is trying to do, anyway.
