It's definitely not gender related. What are you using? What else is going on? Are hormones an issue? They certainly can be at 9 & 10. Also, I have one dc who is a rather good actress (must be in the genes; my brother is a natural & works as a screen actor, and she seems to be the same way) who has at times acted like she didn't know something when she absolutely did. That said, sometimes she really didn't...

Thank you for sharing your list. I've been pondering doing something similar. My boys all have food allergies, two anaphylactic, dh is very into working out and we have a home gym, we try to stick with independent life long activities vs team sports, we hike a lot, so first aid could come in handy, they are very into Man vs. Wild, Survivorman, that type of thing. We do have the Walsh Stranger Danger dvd and watch that a couple times a...

What book was that? The one from Debi Pearl called Created to Be His Helpmeet. If that's the one I'll add my 2 cents. I have that and I've read it and I love it. Again, as you say, it isn't for everyone. But is for me!!

Do you have a metronome? I've always thought that having one would be handy, especially in the beginning and I know my violinists would benefit from having one.
Kun makes nice shoulder rests in different colors that your son might like. How about a book of simple Christmas songs so he can play for the family during the holidays?

Being poor sucks. It sucks incredibly. But look at it this way, you won't find a one of a kind in an expensive shop. You'll find aisles and aisles of the same kind of thing. Seriously, go into a toy shop and look at the pink section. You'll probably be so nauseated you'll forget for a few hours how much it sucks not to be able to shop there.

Pictures collaged in a nice frame, or a bunch of little pictures in those wood frames for a bunch of pictures--you see them at Target, etc. Also, if someone can help here remember to look through it, photo albums. Labelled w/ year and names would probably be good.

You don't have to do the phonics portion. You could just buy the TM and do the other activities. OR you could pick and choose some of the phonics as a review.

I don't know if it is as good quality but my dd7 loves her baby doll that we found at Target. It does make a bit of sound (it sucks a pacifier and cries for a few seconds when you take the pacifier out) but other than that it is just a basic baby doll.

I usually require that my dc read most of the books in a core, but not necessarily on SL's time line. What they haven't finished by the end of the school year I allow them to finish them over the summer. If they strongly dislike one or two books in a core, I allow them to drop them, but no more than two.
HTH!

From a personal perspective, my parents were very poor. . .my mom chose to stay at home mostly (to be honest, due to physical and emotional problems, I don't know that it would have been possible for her to keep a long-term job), and my dad worked hard, but at low-paying jobs. We *NEVER* had enough money. . .my parents tried to make sure we were fed and clothed and got gifts for Christmas and ...

Is it possible they whined at some point and got what they wanted, or (more likely) they saw another child whining and getting what they wanted?
This problem pops up for us after being around certain groups or neighbors. I've gone with the 'you know better' and it seems to work (for the moment). IOW, you know better! Whining will get you nowhere!
At one point I started taking things ...

I have a freelance job where I could definitely work full-time hours and make a good, good amount of money (enough to get us out of debt, save for a house, etc). . but. . I am home w/ my boys. It's definitely a sacrifice, since we're just making it month to month. I can't concentrate on working when I'm watching the boys and teaching my son.
I bring in about $100 or so a week now. I would ...
