I don't know a lot about handguns, but I imagine the difference is similar to that of an open vs closed breach on a rifle.
In a closed breach rifle, there is a mechanism that will draw a round from the clip, push it into the barrel, and then fire it (the firing pin comes out through a hole in the middle of this device and strikes the round).

Terri Garr was a lot older than people realise. She's 64 years old. She used to look amazing for her age right into her 50's. People forget that she's in the same generation as William Shatner, Joan collins, Farah Fawcett, ect. They hit the wall a lot quicker than she did.
