The Martin Sound - Secret Herbs...
Published (2009-11-21 21:46:09)
...but the Martin sound actually began before the D 28 and before Dave or I began playing Martins. However, it is true that Martin is the originator of the popular X braced dreadnaughts which are my favorite Martins. However, I refuse to say smaller older or newer Martins don't count just because I favor dreds. Prior to 1934, going by serial numbers, there were less than 55,000 Martins made. Relatively speaking, a drop in the bucket for...

There are also Harlan Howard and Ron Peterson songs. I know the most about those, so I have to use them for examples. There are many exceptions to standard form songs that have been hits. When "Achy Breaky Heart" came out it was laughed at by almost every writer in Nashville as a pretty poor song, BUT it sold 8 million copies. A fair song sung by a fair singer, but the public loved it! As I have said previously, they get to...

Tom, They were plagued by a high return rate for warranty repairs due to cracking. I thought I remembered that, but wasn't 100% sure. It seems like that could have been sorted out in the prototype phase before going to production, but what do I know?

I met Fahey briefly when we both lived in Oregon. Wonderful, wonderful musician. Excellent guitarist and a way weird guy. I love his music. He
wasn't afraid to take chances and go far beyond what people commonly think of as 'acoustic guitar playing'. I just can't speak highly enough of
this vastly underrated and immensely influential musician.
May he rest in peace.

My initial impression is that I don't like the Eagles' schedule. The opening at Carolina and the back-to-back road games in San Diego and Chicago plus
the ridiculously early bye week (week 4!) seems like a tough road to hoe.
The week 17 Eagles-Cowboys match up is becoming somewhat of a tradition.

Do you recall if the original saddle was cracked?
Hey Clem, I remember having that beauty around the house for a few days!
The saddle was not cracked but it was a real leaner .
I sent the guitar back to the owner in Montana and he had it repaired under warranty.
He was fine with that---and I'm glad you ended up with it!

Question from a guy who never owned a Martin;
Don´t they come with a trussrod tool? The brand I collect allways included a tool, and also a Sigma I bought new in the early 80:s included an insex-tool in a
plastic folder.

I've seen Jack Willams a couple times here in the SE Michigan area. You are right... he is an incredible player and entertainer (and the guitar looks like
it has never seen the inside of a case).

1. lifting bridges are common on acoustic guitars. on newer instruments Martin has left some finish under the very edges of the bridge, and this can cause a
problem. Instrument could have experienced excessive heat. Bridges can start lifting for no obvious reason at all.
2. It's not an urgent repair, but sometime in the near future(maybe the next 6 months), until then you can ...

Let me make myself perfectly clear...Oh jeez, thats what Nixon used to say! I have no problem with Eliot capos or what he charges for them. You Eliot guys can
chill on that idea that any comment on the cost is a shot at Eliot. Personally, as a pro capitalist , I wish Mr Eliot a prosperous future. I would'nt mind
having one of his new ones. They look real nice.

We can all freak out, but I wouldn't be surprised. I understand, from talking informally to dealers, that the stripey Sapele-topped 15's certainly
don't sell as well or as quickly as the genuine hog versions.
Maybe it'll just be a hiatus until more genuine mahogany can be sourced. If that's possible.

Maury,
Genuine interest, of course, and thanks. Availability for me will be tricky this fall on weekends. I might have better chances the closer we get to
Thanksgiving.

The Taylor that I owned didn't have the finger joint, but it did have a scarf joint. It didn't affect the sound of the guitar, and I might have never
noticed it if someone hadn't pointed it out to me. BTW, that finger joint doesn't look too bad to me, and I'm sure it doesn't affect the
Taylor's sound. It does seem that Taylor pays attention to minimizing its presence.

Surprisingly, there's still a NEW D-28 Marquis Madagascar available at Gruhn's. There aren't too many NEW ones still available. In fact, this is
the only one I know of. If I were Gruhn's I would double the price of that guitar. Would their contract with Martin allow them to do that?

eddielang - Not to get too off-topic, but yes there is a style to the Talk Of The Town pieces, and it does date back to the late 20s. I live in New York and I
have a lot of mixed feelings about being here, but I do love the NYer. Its particular style and its history, and the continuity of that history, feel like a
