We are running into the same problems on my Mom's side. Her family came from Poland. But it wasn't Poland, then it was. Changed hands almost daily for a while.

I visit Facebook a lot. I keep in touch with my family in Canada, New York,
Florida, and Michigan there. If you use Twitter and the Twitter plug-in for
Facebook you can maintain a real closeness and sense of involvement even
with far-flung family members like me! I haven't bothered to search for
anybody, but a few people have found me. It's primarily my extended family,
though.

Thinking on the good things, keeping all the happy times foremost in your mind helps ease which seems unbearable stress.
I lost my mother on November 26th which ...

A lot of the at home party things do parties for fundraisers - Tupperware, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, etc.

T-shirts might be something you could look into also.
Our quilt guild just recently did a quilt to be raffled off at a silent auction to help raise money for one of our high school bands ...

French Girl, another way tro give of yourself @ Christmas is to go to the Nursing Homes & geriatric units of the hospitals. Ask the staff if there is anyone who has no-ne to visit them or is all alone. There is more reward to this than meets the eye, as difficult as this may sound. I've experienced such profound things when I've done this.

Courthouses and newpapers. But remember that birth certificates were also keep at churches. My Grandfather's Mom was an orphan. So there isn't much.
If you know where your Dad was born, you can start there.
