The Grand Canyon really isn't a place that you can just visit for 2 hours, unless all you are going to do is get to the village, stick your head over the ledge, and move on. At that point, I'm not sure its even worth the 2+ hours of extra driving you'll need for the detour off of I-40. The Grand Canyon is a huge area, and except for the village, you can only get around the park via shuttle bus. I've been known to zip...

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums ! You have many options but not knowing anything of your interests or what your timescale is, it's not really possible to make any meaningful suggestions, other than to say get out a good map and use the forums for research to find places of interest to you. When you have done so we can make suggestions and "fine tune" your trip but it's up to you to take the first step. Enjoy the...

Taking 40 is only about 40 miles longer than taking 70. You do need to realize that 40 is far from immune to snow and ice storms. I would make your decision at the last minute after checking weather and road conditions. You also need to keep in mind that I-90 between Cleveland and Rochester is subject to heavy lake effect snow. You are moving to a very heavy snow belt, you will have to learn how to drive in it sooner rather than later. If you...

I-90 Road Trip Suggestions???

By far the best way to find interesting places which may not be in your guide books, is to speak to the locals when you arrive at a place. One point of interest which comes to mind is about 20 miles north of Belle Fourche SD, up highway 85, on a side road (old 85), is a small monument in a farmer's field, just off the road, to mark the 'Centre of the Nation'. One of those quirky little attractions you just gotta see. There is...

Just an update: I am now on page 75 of text and photos and, so long as I shut down and reboot my laptop every couple of hours, it is still going strong. I am terrified what happens at the end when you need to upload the thing though... god, if my internet connection dies midway I'm gonna cry!

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums! 1) For camping on the way north from San Francisco, that will depend on whether you take I-5 or the coast highway. I'd recommend the scenery of the later which would put you on the southern coast of Oregon by evening. There are a few state parks with camping: Harris Beach outside Brookings, Hunting Mountain and Cape Blanco south and north of Port Orford, Bullards Beach at Brandon, and Sunset Bay...

I like Lifey's idea but just to add to it, could you leave the day before, even if it was afternoon and arrived late in SF. At least it would give you a couple of days to make your way back and have a few hours in SF. This would work better time wise even if SF wasn't a "must do" for you or your Dad and went to somewhere like Monterey before turning around.

I also prefer to have a grill along for the ride. Many times I've pulled over into a rest area and fired up the grill and have had a good fresh hamburger or steak. It doesn't take up too much room and is great should I find something at a local market that I'd like to cook up, whether it's some fresh fish or grilled chicken, etc. There are some models that have one side as a grill and the other as a stove, which can also be...

Welcome to the RTA Forum! The most straight forward way to Southern California is to take I-40, which is the way you'd want to go to the Grand Canyon anyway. For a different route back, you could look at taking I-15 and I-70 up through Las Vegas, Utah, and Colorado, doubling back south to get home to Wichita. That would take you within a short detour of more than a half dozen national park...

Hi emy, If I were you, I'd avoid I-70 and allow for more time (like 9 days, maybe?), but I don't think it's unsafe if you're a cautious driver to take I-40, or perhaps even a more southerly route. I'm planning a reverse trip in December, and I'd be a little bit nervous about I-70. Do you live in northern CA? I took I-70 once West to East in the summer and the mountains in UT & esp CO were...

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums ! Your itinerary looks in pretty good shape although the one thing that stands out to me is the one night in Grand canyon. Palm springs to Grand canyon is a days drive and to Vegas is 5 hours or so, leaving only a few hours at the Canyon. Shipping costs to use outfits that specialize in baggage forwarding can be prohibitive, even if you can do without your equipment for several days and have an address to send it all to. Even UPS ground would charge around $60 for me to ship a 50 pound package from here in Tucson to the east coast. Such figures start to make the $15 or so that the airlines charge for a 50 pound bag seem ...

Welcome to the RTA forum! The simple fact is that cars make pretty darn poor beds. Sure, they will work in a pinch, and I suppose the larger the car, the more likely you are to have enough room, but really, unless you are a very small person, you're not going to be able to get very comfortable laid out on a bench seat, or reclining in a bucket seat. I've got a suv where I can fold down the ...

Without a student or work visa and a US address, you will have a very difficult time titling and registering a car and obtaining insurance, so a rental is your best option, as long as you are 21 or older. If you are under 25, there will be a surcharge which will increase the cost considerably. How much time do you have for this trip, and will it be one way or a round trip?

Welcome to the RTA Forum! All of the places you've listed are certainly doable within 2 weeks, although you'll have to decide for yourself if it fits with the pace you'd prefer.
