I think the act of gardening, of nurturing nature, puts us all in a category apart from the rest of the world... and what we prefer to nurture within our gardens shows further bits and pieces about us as individuals. For me, gardening is about sharing... it's about doing something I love, and then sharing that enjoyment with others... either through helping, or just showing the beauty of what I'm able to grow. I love the carefully...

Yes, sorry but like most vegetables, zucchini is a low acid so pressure canning would be required. However, no form of canning it is recommended or approved for any of the summer squashes, only pickling or freezing. Per NCHFP FAQ: Why is canning summer squash or zucchini not recommended? Recommendations for canning summer squashes, including zucchini, that appeared in former editions of So Easy to Preserve have been withdrawn due to...

Larry, One of my gardening friends up the road from us keeps a radio going 24/7 in his apple trees so the deer will leave his apple trees alone. The apple trees are in an open area beside his fenced-in garden. However, the deer jump the 4' fence, get into the garden and eat everything in it. They always eat the okra first, and then everything else. I think it is interesting that a radio in one tree will keep the deer out of/away from all...

I finally got Charles Mallerin, from Vintage. It is very hard to find. Just my luck, when it arrived it was the weakest of the four. The others were Grace Darling, Ibizia and Osiria, and they are thriving. Charles arrived as one stick with a few leaves at the top. He was potted in a small pot, just like the others, with Rosetone and alfalfa. The pot has a wick at the bottom so that frequent ...

my pond is 8 years old and was intended to be 3 feet deep at the deep point BUT the concrete contractor did his pour in such a way that the concrete "slumped" adding depth where it was not desired. This has been OK I suppose but now I am thinking that I can add depth to the pond by building up the sides with rock and mortar. There are already rocks etc. I have set in the top around the edges. ...

After reading the "It is really true" post I am so jealous. All the petunias are great. Keep hearing people say petunias are so easy! I seem to have a problem with them. I had decided I wasn't going to bother with them but my heart kept telling me that everybody has such nice pots and beds that I needed them too. They add so much color. Last chance, well maybe! So I order seeds and the couple ...

List Your Top 10 Street Trees This is a bit of a fuzzy question since there are all kinds of scenarios like limited available width, power lines, rural or urban, sandy soils or compacted clay and on and on. But I ask the question anyway to see what kind of replies you folks come up with. Street trees are generally considered the trees within 8' or so of the street edge and would be planted ...

Our pond is @ 1600 gallons w/ a skimmer and bottom drain. Deepest area is a little over 3 ft deep. We are looking for a vac that can pick up small gravel (about the size of aquarium gravel) from potted pond plants that accumulates around the bottom drain and perhaps some leaves that sink before making it to the skimmer. Our wet/dry shop vac does not work at this depth. I assume the less-...

I have been faithfully mowing on the highest and second highest mower setting ( reel mower) as per the advice on this and the Lawn forum (thank you to everyone). However, I have a few questions. My grass is a mix of perennial rye and fescues (with some fine fescue, I believe; some of it is terribly fine and seems very fragile). 1. The grass, when I mow it high, seems to just flop over in many...

Well, here it is, already July 3rd. Heat's supposed to return next week-enjoyed the cooler weather? I will be digging Potatoes, and Pulling onions , perhaps tomorrow. Tried to give her plenty of time...

I have been talking to others about this and spending a ton of time learning more about the laws of our land. I have learned so much about how our government operates and how most people really don't have a clue. I was clueless, but now I see that I really want to get out of the system. I know there are many people who have done it, the right way, and I was wondering if anyone here has any ...

I noticed the people directly across the street from us has had painters there prepping and scraping down their house. Well much to my surprise and dismay, when I saw the new color go up on one side, it's the *exact* same color as our house. :( The paint was delivered from Sherwin Williams and I'll bet you all about anything that the color is Compatible Cream. By Eoin O'Carroll, Christian Science Monitor. Posted June 30, 2009. "A story last week in the Telegraph, a British paper, describes how the city of Flint, Mich., a former industrial powerhouse now facing depopulation and plummeting home values, is dealing with vacant housing. The solution? Bulldoze entire districts, returning the land to nature, and concentrate the population in the urban ...

I am going to this auction and I need to ask a question and see how ya'll feel about this matter. And please be honest don't sugar coat your answer. Many of you know I live in Alabama.
