Thanks, I'll check that out. I am really on the fence, because I've been looking to jump to Avid for numerous reasons, but at this price, I might be able to swing both.

So I set the timeline to DV/DVCPRO since that is the only DV-NTSC options. Also set 16:9 and dropped a clip on the timeline. Rendered and it looks nice at 720x486. Then I exported as Quicktime files a very short clips 2 sec. Now I have sent it out email to see if they can import into Premier Pro on a PC. Waiting for their response.

I've never understood why people consider an iMac for serious video work; it's a laptop with a big screen, external keyboard and no expandability options. Save up a few extra $$ and get a Mac Pro, even a refurbished or used one to save some dough. You'll then have everything you need to be fully compatible with any video camera and accessory required for pro editing, period.

David: thanks for your carefully considered (and polite) reply. The issue I took was with the "big head" comment solely. We have ALL done free work at some point in our lives and/or careers. Do I condone it? No. What I ENCOURAGE all that will gather around my soapbox to do is make a fair and equitable contra deal anytime a client LEGITIMATELY cannot afford video work. NeoScene 24P conversion
Published (2009-11-24 22:30:00)
Yes. 60i to 24p conversion will have temporal artifacts if you source wasn't 24p embedded within 60i. However many to do use this feature, particularly if you can lock the camera to 1/60th shutter, which almost removes much of strobe judders. Of course 24p, even when shot with a 24p camera will have motion judder, with certain movements. 24p shooting requires a more stable camera. You need to move your camera like is was a 50+lb film camera.

Hey Harm, its me again to suggest an edit. When you bring up memtest, you state that you shouldn't run it until you notice problems. I just experienced hell for the last few months because 1 of 6 sticks was bad but it only caused occasional problems. If someone is trying to get a stable OC, they must run 'memtest86' before OC'ing otherwise they won't know for certain if their OC is the culprit of any instability...

What does 60p footage look like?...
Published (2009-11-22 21:36:00)
I think they are referring to the strobe effect as a slower framerate in which you can see the frames changing. Look at a faster pan while recording 24p and you will see the motion going faster than the frames, which shows the frames changing. Slower shutter speeds would make the image mushy, not stroby imho. Faster shutter speeds might look more stroby. Sort of slices of images rather than s smooth flow between frames.

It doesn't get any cheaper than fluorescents from skaeser.com. The lights you need depend on the situations. Fluorescents are nice for interviews because they're cool, don't pull much power and you can get either 3200 or daylight bulbs. Coollights.biz has some fluorescents too that are very reasonable if you get the 2-bulb non-dimmable units. Softboxes are nice but a bit of a pain to set up and ...

Did you get any further in your search Piotr? I too am on the lookout for a monitor of that size, I'm looking for an HDMI one though so that I can use it with my EX1 (via component) and my 5dmkII. I can't even begin to imagine editing on a laptop EVERY day - as a value added thing for clients while watching rough cuts, sure but every day... not my style. I like two BIG monitors, a "real" keyboard and mouse and all the other things that come from a desktop. But I'm "old" at 38 so I've been working on desktops my entire career.

Hi Greg, I just jumped over to your site. Impressive! Are you hoping to get the same look that you get in your stills? If so, you're going to find that you need a lot of light. I'd say the least expensive big, soft, portable lights are going to be the Lowel Rifa. So when traveling, using tungsten because you can leave the bulbs in the softbox and set-up fast. In the studio or local, you can ...

Trying to decide between HPX300 or buying the new SONY EX1R - thought I'd see if anyone has some thoughts on the better image overall? 1/3" vs 1/2" sensors may sell the SONY EX1R for me but the 4:2:2 and 10-bit Panny makes me think as well... Any thoughts on why EX1R is the way to go over the HPX-300? Or maybe you don't think so... Thanks K

Hi Mike, You should forget at the word "best" since that term is very relative and can cost many USD. I am using two systems, one based on a sonnet tempo and the second with a RocketRaid. Both are connected to external racks with port multipliers what allows me to plug up to 25 hard disks on each card. I didnt like the Sonnet even if many users says that are top notch i found the RocketRaid...

Premiere has a "feature" that adapts the preview image to the load on your cpu to try to keep a real-time playback. (You can turn this off). It is likely that the additional calculations for the color correction are causing Premiere to drop back to a lower res preview. Try rendering the clip first and playing back in high-quality mode and see if that's the problem.../ Battle Vaughan

There are no lavaliere mics on the market for that price range with XLR connections. The cheapest begin at around U.S. $200.00 list. I would advise renting, $50.00 mics sound like crap regardless of the connection. Dan

Interesting to hear that you are having the problem with HDV. I am having the same problem with Sony XDCam EX1 footage converted to CF in HDLink, but only when played by PPro, either CS3, or CS4. If I play the CFHD.avi clip in a player (WMP, etc.) the synch is fine. I've never figured out what the problem is. My workaround is to unlink the A & V in PPro timeline, adjust the synch. I seem to get an awful lot of line twitter and background shimmering when viewing my EX1 and EX3 footage on a 1080p LCD TV. Its the same effect whether I am watching raw footage straight from the camera or the edited version on DVD. I've read a few posts here suggesting that this is probably a monitoring issue but the fact is that my end clients are watching the end output on similar consumer TVs...

I mostly output in FCP in it's original settings of the sequence, and if I need other versions for web and dvd, I all do them in Compressor. It gives me the oppurtunity to put things in a batch, and have more control over the image when needed.
