Orvis Midge owners Unite!
Published (2009-11-27 20:26:01)
I've told it often enough that the story's growing a gray beard. Finally I had to "replace" my faithful 1967 Midge with a Midge/Nymph I found a few years ago. It's a good choice for Black Hills streams. So it gets its own choice (depending on whether its mood is dark or light) of a Young Valdex lined with a Cortland Clear Creek WF5F or a Hardy Bougle lined with a Lefty Kreh WF5F. It never seems to be out of the...

So , which one of you "makers" make the nicest ferrule. Chris, show us a photo and I'll be the judge. It'll be just my opinion of coarse.

I have a 7'6" 5 weight Orvis Battenkill that fishes well. I don't get into all of the specifics, but this is a nice rod to fish with.

Heddon 8.5' 2F ~ 2 1/2F ~ 2 3/4F in the best grade your willing to pay for. The 1 3/4F is a great light line rod if required. Sweet casters with a little vibration or is that called osculation, I never seem to remember if you use to light a line it increases. I really like the 2 3/4F fo the bigger fish. The Phillipson is a real nice 6wt at that length.

John Landman Rods

Bruce, Allow me to clarify my posting. I posted the Chubb Silkien rod to illustrate the similarities between it and the Empire City Octagonal rod posted. It is NOT marked as an Empire City rod. I'll try to get a close-up posted in the next couple of days. It is difficult to get good, clear pics of this blackened hardware. I need to get a better lighting studio . . . Rex TheMontyMan

John Landman Rods
Published (2009-11-25 22:14:15)
Dave Hal Bacon was of the opinion that Ed Payne produced them, which is within the realm of possibility. Perhaps Mr. Carmichael will find something on that. As of 1890, I don't think anyone in the Kosmic gang was capable of that kind of work. Payne had been a machinist for well over a decade by then and he was right there in Mr. Kosmic's Neighborhood. Who else? Varney? Hmmm. Could be. Dunno. It just seems to be a little notch above...

Payne ID help needed

I got this 9 1/2' 3/2 Payne, non original bag and tube, several months ago and still can't tie down the model number or approx date of manufacture or whether made by Jim or by Ed...I would like to be able to find that out so that I can restore it...it is unique in that it has double footed guides, no snakes, all the way on each section with clear agate tip and stripper guides...it looks to have an overcoat of varnish and maybe was...

In my opinion the best all around orvis models are the 7.5' 2/2 3&7/8oz and the 8' 2/2 4&1/4oz. The 7.5' will generely fish a 5wt and
the 8' a 6wt, again in my opinion. The same basic rods in a 3/2 configuration are also nice but a little harder to find. Also, in my opinion, the lower
the serial number the better the rod. In todays market around $550.00 for a good rod, with no issues, but...

Mr. Duma, if I may say so, you specialize in attacks and in the fine art of unbalanced criticisms. I'd be impressed if your posts were informational,
constructive and of lasting interest. But alas. Almost every post constitutes attack, dismemberment and I-(or a friend)am-superior-to-someone-else. If you
carefully re-read your post, you'll discern that you attempt to disparage one author by citing...

It couldbe. I never wear my grouse helmet or a tie when I fish for bass. I
usually wear a one piece jump suit that pretty much looks like a NASCAR
drivers suit.

Tell your friend. You'd be doing him a favor. With employees like that I bet there are other shoppers who decided to go elsewhere. Also tell him about
the guy who you got good service from .

For me technical water means highly pressured waters with trout that can be picky and spooky. Usually small flies and fine tippets. The kind of waters where
trout won't respond to attractor flies becasue they've seen them all thousands of times or are they are just naturally wiley like some in spring
creeks. In waters I know to be like this ( the Caney Fork can be at times techy and really ...

My opinion... because we're obsessive idiots. There is no sane reason for what we do and why we do it. For some reason, we just love rods and no matter how
many we've acquired, it's never enough. No offense meant as I can only really speak for myself. I know for me, if I had stopped the insanity with the
first bamboo rod I purchased, a W. Powell Golden Signature (two butts of different lengths ...
