I used an MXL (1006) into a Studio Projects VTB1 and then either a dbx163X or software compressor for years. It worked OK. FWIW, I still use the VTB1 frequently on guitars, sometimes on vox. (Current go-to is AT4040 to Meek VC3Q.)

I know a guitar is a great one for me when I pick it up and start playing, and I come up with a new riff or song right away. The first time this happened I figured I was just inspired by playing a new instrument, as I hadn't played anything new in a while. Now I have a number of guitars, all of them are ones that I've picked up and playing something, saying "wow that really sounds great on this". I tend to always...

That song is great, and it's probably one of their most popular songs. But, I would have loved to hear "Hey" which is the only other 3 minute song on that album I think! Disappointing. I've only seen Frank Black solo, and he had a lot more energy.

Chris is right, but I would also say that the germanium comp is something I use all the time and can do a lot of different things for you. It changes color very well, based on how hard you are hitting it, and also how much make up you are applying. Its really got something that NONE of my other compressors will do. The distressor can feel like a bigger 160A sometimes (which is cool), but the germ just has a vibe to it (played out producer...

Glad I could be of assistance! I used to do everything through cubase before they added the control room so that's why I had to figure that out. I tried dragging over an old synth or something from C3 and it wouldn't work in C4, but i was successfully able to copy the LM7 module over and it works like a charm. I am sure there are better sounds and stuff in halion, but for clicks LM7 is so simple - and I like simple. _________________...

That's a good way to do it! Very cool, T-rex! Yes, that's weird that the MOTU is so stringent on what you can do with the I/O. I could literally make 8 different mono suboutputs in Cubase and route them all to the same physical 1/4" jack on the back of my Firepod if I wanted to. I guess the drivers for the Presonus are much more flexable in that regard. I've always disliked the built-in audio metronome in Cubase....

Remember when you could get a better deal through booking 12-hour lock-outs at studios? Remember how that meant your session/mix set-up wouldn't be disturbed overnight and you paid extra for that right through having a day rate? If a client was paying for a lock-out, it was 12 hours of studio time for X price. If they got done early, it was no ones fault and they still paid X rate. The above scenario is breaking this down to hours- or...

There is no argument. You just use whichever technique gets you the results you want. When I'm dealing with a poorly recorded track that needs some repair EQ, that comes before compression. That way you keep, for example, a bunch of muddy or resonant bass junk from rubbing up against the threshold the whole time. Then I might compress and EQ again afterward. Typically, though, I will ...

My drummer, who's real good and a soon-to-be reconstructed jazzer , has "K" hi-hats and they are way too loud. What can we do to quiet 'em, physically, as when we get going he tends to hit 'em kinda hard? By what I mean, is there a way to mute 'em some? Like a wallet-onna-snare thing? They are OK with the fiber-sticks (whatever those bundled things are called), but some ...

I've got a Firestudio Project. There are a number of threads about it on here. First off one thing you'll tend to find is that the mic pres on it aren't too bad, and are very useful when you run out of external pres. The main caveat is that there doesn't seem to be a way to bypass the pres. However, if you keep the gain pretty neutral (I've heard that on this unit that would be about 1/4 up) it's...

Yes, but you have to use the Studio Mixer. You can assign different outputs and then each output has a little "button" to turn the click on or off on that output. So for instance, you can have your main outs, and several monitor outputs and several headphone outputs all on the Studio Mixer, routed to different outputs on your interface and then each one can either have click or not. ...

PM1000's are pretty primitive. Stock, they'll let you record 7 tracks at once (4 busses and 2 auxes and one more on the talkback), but with no resources left for monitoring. They don't have channel inserts, direct outs or a stereo bus. If you're able to do some solder work, you can add inserts and/or direct outs (I spose you could add the stereo bus, also...but that's a bit more ...

As far as equipment goes, Try the neumann live vocal mics, they are quite sensitive. Try a limiter / compressor plus an EQ after that, and de-ess er maybe (if you do ess a lot) Cheers

It depends. But I've definitely used them. It kinda depends on the style of music, some styles tend to use samples more than others. As far as 'cheating'...well, a) you don't like the sound you have, and 2) you don't have a drumset available to re-cut the part...so I would venture to say that if using samples to get the sound you want is your only option...it's probably not ...
