Why couldn't he patch it up without killing a hippie? Seriously, protesting that the hippie was God in human form doesn't really answer the question. Why does God need a sacrifice to save people from himself? Why couldn't he just go ahead and decide not to be a dickbag? Also what, exactly are "sins," and how can they have any effect on an omnimax God? Why are they his business? If God really did decide to come...

In most cases, the police already have a pretty good guess of who the person is, and just need to verify it. So if you think it might be Jane Smith, then you go talk to Jane's dentist, ask her relatives, etc.

Medicare is an efficient organization. The cost of running it is minuscule. It is far more efficient than private corporations. Medicare is saddled with the people insurance companies do not want. The old and the long term ill. If Medicare could get paid to cover everybody, the cost would drop a ton. It would be so civilized.

Anyway, other names I've heard: Princess(already stated) Diamond - I've had 2 kids named Diamond in two years. Tucker - I hate this name. It should be banned. One time, I had a kid named Tucker and his last name....well, it started with "f" and had the "uck" or "ugh" sound to it. The whole year, I was afraid of calling him "Fucker Taulk" or something. Seeing that there is a Fallout 3 vs. Oblivion thread below, I may as well jump in one with my own. I have just gotten the game and is getting my ass handed to me. I just reached Megaton, only has a 10mm pistol and wherever I go I am owned. There was a giant scorpion at the super market; once I ran into three Talon mercenaries. There's nothing I can do. What is the best way to...

I'm starting this thread as a spin-off from my pit thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=523 593 because some interesting points are being raised in that thread. There is a lot that makes sense to me about having our government involved in/providing some kind of healthcare. This comes in part from my own experience, which I've detailed in the other thread, but I will recap...

Max Blumenthal , a leftist putative " investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker", has recently edited and published a hit-piece video entitled “Feeling The Hate In Jerusalem” . Blumenthal apparently contradicts himself in his description of the purpose of the video: He first claims it was taken on the "eve" of President Obama's Cairo speech, but then he goes on claim he's filming ...

I was all excited to try Carbonite until I saw in small print that they only support Intel Macs, which mine is not. I found Backjack, which does support backup from my G4, but it's kind of pricey compared to Carbonite. Backjack offers blocks of storage (which can get pricey) and I understand Carbonite offers unlimited storage. Random Google searches get me a lot of returns that offer ...

I'm a male and I love cold pizza. In fact, I like it better the next day when it's been refrigerated overnight. I've been told by two female friends now that cold pizza is a guy thing. They claim that women do not like and will not eat cold pizza. So what's the deal? Is it a gender thing? footnote: this was my best guess for the appropriate forum. Feel free to move it...

According to the Chicago Tribune , Sun-Times and ESPN the sale of the Chicago Cubs by the Tribune Company to a group headed up by the Ricketts family , founders of Ameritrade, is almost complete. The deal, over 2 years in the making, is not officially completed yet. MLB still has to approve the deal and some of the finer details regarding the ownership percentages of WGN need to be ...

Here's the article with picture. Okay, it's Fox News, but I really just wanted a picture of the shirt. Do you guys think it's too graphic/inappropriate for school? It's definitely kind of oogy but I don't think it's as graphic as I was afraid it would be. I tried to ask myself if I would be offended by a similar pro-choice t shirt. The only kind of pro-choice shirt that comes to mind is a ...

I was flipping through The New York Times movie reviews a week or so ago and realized that I've never seen they or any other American reviewer give a foreign movie a bad review. What accounts for this? Do the foreign films that make it to the U.S. get here because they're that good? Is there a certain high-brow elitism that foreign flicks are more cultured and artistic? I've seen a ...

So my over-educated (but stupid) know-it-all unemployed sister-in-law is here with her two little snatches. My father-in-law (who's very cool) is also here. My wife hasn't seen her father in a few years and wanted him to come up, the only problem is that it's a package deal. So, no SIL and crotchfruit, no FIL. This is of course because of SIL's manipulation of FIL. So here they are, ...

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/20...gn-as-gover nor What is going on here? The 2012 presidential election isn't for another 3 1/2 years. Is she really in that much trouble up in Alaska that she was in danger of being booted out of office. Or is she just bored with the whole idea of running a government on a daily basis?

Inspired by this segment on today's "All Things Considered," on NPR: Black Ministers In D.C. Divided Over Gay Marriage It's about how D.C. is about to approve a proposal to recognize gay couples married in other states, and how blacks in D.C. and across the country are overwhelmingly against gay marriage rights. The one certainty this year will be the massive British interest in Andy Murray's prospects of victory. As a reminder to citizens of the more successful tennis playing countries among us, this was last achieved by Fred Perry in 1936. Perry also emerged the winner in 1934 and 1935. The seedings in the mens competition largely reflect the ATP rankings, with only Marat Safin promoted to any ...

For the purposes of this thread, guns are 'off the table'. Please leave guns out of it. I often hear at Conservative-leaning message boards and from Conservatives in real life that American 'freedoms' are under attack. Ther are a lot of people who will throw out the term pedophile linked to Michael Jackson's name as if it was a foregone conclusion. However, he clearly was never convicted of such a thing, but he did pay some people off. So I amjust wondering how much of the perception is based on facts and how much of it is based on the repeated meme. I kno, for example that Michael liked to say he shared...

I remember the specific instant when I realized that the representational Universe in which we live is inconsistent, and that all the adults in the world were lying about it. I was in grade 2 and I laid my big pencil down on the desk. It started to roll on the tilted desk, I made a grab for it, and missed. I felt the pencil hit my foot, then heard it clatter to the floor. I bent over to pick ...
