For step 7 (Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware), I found that there were four options for the Realtek AC'97 Audio device. when doing scan disk, go to safe mode and when there, close all unneeded programs and run scan disk in safe mode. If you get a restart, you will continue to have it because windows comes accross a program and will not bully itself past it so it will try 10 times and ask what to do, but the conditions never change so there you go 10 more times and so on and on and on. good luck qfisheye

Try and go into safe mode, if it works, back up your data and recover back to factory settings. If that doesnt' work after reinstalling your sound drivers, you could have a hardware fault, report the fault to the people you purchased it from for repair, if under warranty of course.

Hi a friend rang me about her laptop,its running vista thats as much detail as i could get.when power button is pressed machine powers up and all associated lights are lit and fan can be heard but screen is a total blank.She was able to say for certain that the monitor does not even display the bios screen,memory test screen,no white text nothing whatsoever.Not sure if this is a software or hardware issue so this post is also on the vista...

i totally agree with hp being garbage for the simple fact that i own one
and yes it is a peice but i just upgraded my operating syste to window 7
ultimate and now i have absolutly no sound i got a X over my speaker icon
now it have atempted twwice to install a multimedia audio controller. i
also whent to hp website andd downloaded the conextant audio driver and it
seams to download but does not ...

Hi NYF. First Registry programs will not help you with IE problems and Adaware is a piece of Sh!#.
If IE is freezing up I would reset ittools>internet options>advandced>reset.

i'm having a similar problem, no sound after installing xp pro on a fresh hard drive. i've already tried downloading the driver from the gateway website but it fails every time it tries to install. anyway, here's my stuff:

Hi Kim, I think the issue may of being a result of you not uninstaling 2007 before you installed 2003. I would try system restore back before you installed 2003.
Then once restored try to uninstall 2007.
