If you dont care about HD and just want the basics, just go with what ever is cheaper. IMHO Directv has a better looking box (HA HA) than Dish. Depending on where you live Dish might not carry your locals. That would be the number one issue. So find out if Dish has your local networks, if they do, just go with the cheaper one, if they don't, stick with Directv.
