Top 10 2009 Black Friday...
Published (2009-11-25 12:16:00)
Here is the only tip you need in regard to Black Friday: 1. Do not shop on Black Friday. This is because the deals will only get better as we get nearer to Christmas, and often the best deals are after Christmas. Let the lemmings get all worked up in a lather about Black Friday...this is precisely what the retail industry wants you to do. Don't play into their hands. Don't go with the crowd...

Understand ex-dividend dates
Published (2009-11-25 11:27:00)
I think you may be slightly over-complicating the dividend dates. If you want to purchase a stock because you anticipate a good dividend yield and capital return, then you should buy the stock. Once you buy it, you will then own the stock when it arrives at the next ex-dividend date and subsequent declaration date and thus receive the dividends. It's really very simple, actually. You just can't expect to receive dividends if you...

PS: Broken Arrow is right. Age 14 is an age of "sentience" and they will take the child's opinion into account. The child doesn't get to decide, ultimately the parents and the courts decide. . .but if there is an even split on legal facts, the court will probably side with the child. Pre-14. . .they will usually default to the mother. Courts are still gender-biased in that regard. Other factors they will consider -...

Along the lines of what lovcom is saying, the last episode of Bank of Mom and Dad (available at hulu.com) showed a girl in debt and her parents took her to a soup kitchen to volunteer and speak with people there. It really opened her eyes to what could happen to her if she didn't clean up her act. She was only 22 so she's got plenty of time to fix the problems. For someone 40 years older, it could well be too late if debt far...

I need basic investing...

I need to learn how to go beyond savings account/CD and retirement. We have saved a bit more money lately and would not mind investing it into something that would bring better interest than what you can get now with non-rsky options. Stocks? Money markets? Which? Is there a book you would recommend? Where do I even start?

Penny Experiment - I need your help
Published (2009-11-25 05:40:00)
I was going to suggest asking people on the internet to send you one penny, but the cost of the stamp outweighs the cost of the penny, and that just seems silly. I don't know, but I love the idea! I wish you luck.

Divorce settlement alternatives?
Published (2009-11-24 05:46:00)
I was going to throw out the idea of a "collaborative divorce." Which apparently you are on that track. I have heard great things about the process. You still get the legal advice (the legalities can be a minefield) and someone "on your side." But far more flexible and affordable. More working together than fighting. Good Luck!

The reasoning is that the math is better. All psychological issues aside,
the interest rates on your debts are likely higher than the return on your
retirement.

Legally, you can pretty much have any kind of arrangement you would like so long as both party agrees to it in writing.
For example, my ex-wife pushed for full custody of the kids, full ownership of the house, full ownership of the family car, and of course, full child support. If I had agreed to that and signed for it in her initial separation agreement, then that would be the legal, binding...

Take it from an "old lady" well, lets just say I'm passed 60 but under 70; if someone asks you to loan them money as a prerequisite to marriage or a friendship, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! You don't need that pressure at all. Marriage should be a time of coming together and creating your own financial situation together; not coming in to a situation that you did not help to create. I would think ...

Doesn't the new equipment have some type of warranty? Call the company and get the name of another service person in your area certified to do warranty work for them.
I would not suggest that your husband do anything to it because doing so could void the warranty.

I met with some friends last Friday and we had an excellent discussion about the Fed and the history of finance and then someone brought up my website. Usually people want to hear why I created BuildMyBudget, but this person was bringing it up because she couldn't see why there was any point to managing her budget.
In her case it was probably because she is a full time student, isn't ...

#12: Consider investing in a wheelchair. You're less likely to be trampled, and if all else fails, you're prepared for the long road to recovery! (assuming, of course, that you survive)

I voted for 'reasonable'. At approximately 33% of income, it is a bit high, but having just moved from a very HCOLA ( Wash DC) I know how much people in those areas sacrifice for decent housing.
However, another thing I know about areas like that is that MANY people have what most people in this country would consider an outragous commute in order to have affordable, decent housing. So, ...

So I take it you have no EF at all.
Paying off debt at the expense of EF is foolish. Hopefully you'll reign in your holiday spending and avoid another pile of debt.
Good luck!

I made a "quiet book" for my niece once (book made out of cloth with things to do in it, like braid a girls hair, match shapes, match colors, etc, with snaps and an outline on the page and snaps on the pieces) Gave a camouflage blanket out of fleece to a nephew. Made a scrapbook for a boyfriend for Valentine's day. Made pillow cases for a sister and a nephew with their names appliqued on them....

Your friend is a cute guy...Maybe he is a communist...
He lives in his ideal .
You should suggest that he must face the reality.
