Glaucoma
Published (2009-12-19 14:04:00)
> Interesting solution to the problem! I am going to pass this on to a friend who just had her dog get glaucoma in the second eye. She had the first eye removed a year and a half ago, now he's got it in the other one. She does not want to put the dog down even though he is blind. Says he's still happy and getting around fine, but she has to do something about that eye. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, it is...

Snomobile Training Question

Average Cost of a Sled Team??
Published (2009-12-18 10:14:00)
> FWIW I have today off for my b-day, so I'm getting my hair colored and then heading up to the mountains to run the dogs. So far the only tentative volunteers to visit with me from out of town have been mushing peeps, even though the weather is supposed to be pretty bad (aka 'bring a snorkel and water wings if you still decide to show up, I'll try not to drip my hair on you'). It's the kind of day that only makes...

> Hi all (More Questions from me ), Is anyone here a qualified (if there is such thing) 'mushing' guide? Or does anyone know what type of skills & qualifications are needd to become a 'Mushing' guide? Or maybe a website that may list them. I am looking to try and secure a job for the winter within the next 12 months as a 'Mushing'guide before I commit to a longer stint. Hence,I'd like to do all the...

malamute
Published (2009-12-17 02:15:00)
> Mals are wonderful sled dogs. That is what they were bred to do. They are one of the oldest dog breeds, thousands of years old. We have two, and they can pull our racing sled with a driver with no problem at all. They are strong and powerful and will pull at a nice cruising speed, nothing crazy fast. I agree with FunHog, check out Joe Henderson's site. He is a wonderful reference for mal lovers. We are subscribed to Mushing Magazine...

There are alot of variables to that question. It depends on the quality of food you are feeding and the cost per bag. Do you need a truck to move them around or are you going straight out of your yard? If you are only running out of your yard with no trucking involved, it is costing me about $9-$10,000/year in food for 29 dogs. Add in at least $1,000. for vet bills ...

Garnet, you may be able to import some wheat straw from the east slope. You could give that a shot. Another option is to use wood chips rather than straw. If you go that route you might want to avoid cedar, as that is pretty oily wood. One of the down sides of wood chips, especially in your area, is pitch from pine chips. You may be able to find aspen chips from...

We have elevated houses, similar to your idea and we and the dogs love them. We don't tether though so I'm not sure how it would work with that. We don't use hinges on the roofs - we make the roof so it fits down and over the sides of the house and you just pull it up and off. You can even just pull them up, push them back part way and add straw. Sometimes it ...

I have no experience in an old dog, but we had a young dog (4 yrs) get glaucoma a year and a half ago. After 6 months of eye drops, the best solution was to just have the eye removed. We gave him away to a woman who paid for the operation and he is doing absolutely fine, and she has a very good sled dog out of the deal. She had the eye examined after it was ...

Yes human grade zinc works great and is much cheaper than pet store drugs. Also use a good quality cream /ointment on thier paws as well as booties when training your dogs. 5 days in the yard and it may look better but the first time excersize and it will open up again. Some dogs have feet that are as tough as nails, others will need booties all thier life.

Sorry but keeping a Malamute in a crate while you are at work all day seems wrong to me. I re-read your post twice trying to figure out what is going on here, and checked your profile and saw that you plan to breed malamutes and someday do tours with them. However, you have to keep them inside in a crate? Um, I think a reality check is in order. Your eight month ...
