Recommendations for a beginner

i would go with a batson over a loomis. i have a buddy who has loomis blanks at his shop if you need them but i would honestly go with a batson for the money. i guess it really comes down to your fishing style and what you like in an action of a rod. i had a buddy break a rod blank from batson and they replaced it with no questions asked. the part he broke was the handle of a 4 piece 8/9wt 13' spey rod. he kinda ran it over with his...

QUOTE (Mark Shamburg @ Dec 14 2009, 10:02 PM) The material: 4" diameter 6061-T6 Aluminum round bar stock. That's when my camera ran out of battery today. After that I drilled a big hole in the center of the part and used a boring bar to hog out a ton of stock from the inside of the piece. All the work so far has just been very rough to get rid of all the excess stock. Tomorrow I'll start on the finishing...

Writing on rod
Published (2009-12-16 18:52:00)
I tried scuffing and also got a foggy background. I use a gold gel pen from Cabela's and write over a thin base coat of Threadmaster Lite. However......my handwriting is lousy and am considering spending a few shekels and working with one of the decal suppliers. I understand that they will do onesy-twosy orders.

Well, there's no going back now. It's had one coat of finisher, and I'm glad I've run with it. I'm starting to like it. I just got to figure out how to bridge the gap between the handle and the wrap now. Cheers, Stu

Ferrule Problem
Published (2009-12-11 20:49:00)
Ah. I see what you're doing. The chart below should be what you have. Notice the second column. That is the inch measurement from the tip of the rod (not the tip of the section). You're equating the 45" mark on the tip with the 35" mark on the butt. If you look you'll see the 45" dimensions are the same in both the top and bottom boxes. In the case of both the tip and the butt you'll want to use...

Steelhead float rod advice
Published (2009-12-15 23:58:00)
I bet Rainshadow has guides/components all figured out and listed on their website. We need some kind of reference rod to be able to talk about tip and backbone as they are very relative terms. Doesn't have to be that length rod. Just a heads up, there is quite a dramatic weight/performance difference between the IST and XST blanks.

Sell it on ebay and then go buy whatever you want. A lot of gift cards sell for close to their dollar value.

The best tip I've received on inlays it to use wax coated twist ties to hold down large feathers than don't want to sit down around the blank. To use the twist tie, first, put a thin strip of pg where you want to lay the feather down, place the feater down, and brush it into place, goin in the diretion of the feathers. When you get the feather positioned properly, wait a minute or two ...

I don't want to have to buy another reel/line setup if I can help it, but the vast majority of the casting I'd use the rod for would be very short. Should I look at a 2 or 3 wt blank? Whoever you talked to was not a good source of information. Graphite used in all rod blanks are first and formost graphite used making aviation and other parts and structures, less then a percent of it is used in fishing rod construction. How could Loomis control that? The first graphite rod was built by Fenwick, guess Loomis loses out there too as far as any proprietory control. Lots of ...

Sounds good, welcome to the insanity. Gray blank? Its hard to get any colors wrong on those blanks . My personal opinion (not that its worth much): Might want to go with a darker reel seat insert. Darker colors with the dark wraps and dark burnt accents might make the light insert look out of place. Again just my building preferences. Pete

Dave, Welcome to a secondary rod building addiction - turning wood and cork. Finishing wood can easily become a third.... To your first question, practice is a good way to improve your wood turning skills. In addition to practice, look at places like You-Tube to observe wood turners using different tools to create different effects in their wood creations. Each tool has its own use, ...

What happened to the bottles that were not sealed well? Epoxy has a VERY long shelf life. I use Flex Coat High Build too, but I put on multiple light coats.

First off, welcome to the RBF. I bought these in gold and silver. I don't know how long it takes to completely dry, but I give it several hours, just to play it safe. I just recently used the silver on this 2wt, and I wrote the inscription in gold over green thread on an UL that I just finished. (Photos to come tomorrow.) Chris

If your talking about the round metal ones with flat disks like what a sewing machine uses, No the bottom is fastened by a bolt or screw. The top piece screws in & out compressing or releasing a spring that pushes the 2 disks together. The only dumb question is one not asked!
