Every surround and SACD fan...

I should add I don't think SACD was the proper choice anyway in hindsight, DVD-A was, Panasonic and Warner were right. Of course with Sony and other major players firmly behind SACD, DVD-A couldn't amount to anything either. All of the mistakes are behind us, let's hope something positive for high resolution stereo and surround music is in the cards for the future. Chris

In the "old days", 60's and 70's, music was more than just a business. Artists were given time to develop, and companies would take risks (not all of them successful) with new products and technologies. However, in these days of bottom lines, there is little time for a product or format to prove itself. The whole market is different. We used to pride ourselves on our "stereos". New speakers, new...

New Form of MC HI Rez??

I was at Target last night and saw the price for the Strar Trek remake on BD at $50.00. I know that Target is somewhat more upscale than Walmart, etc., but I think they overestimate the spending ability of the consumer. I have a little bit more spending money (but not much more) than the average person, and no way would I pay that much. They still need to come down in price, and for music-only to grab the attention of shoppers they would have...

Interesting points there, and well needing some serious consideration. as far as 20Hz goes, I confess I routinely use HPF with a minimum of 48dB/Octave slopes unless there is genuinely something down there I need to allow through as it tightens up the bass response no end by filtering out crap like rumble & unwanted thumps.

I must confess I don't listen to surround all that often, therefore my experience is somewhat limited. Others here will be better able to differentiate a "good" surround mix from a "bad" one. Are active surrounds preferable to a more ambient approach? I certainly don't know. A matter of opinion maybe?.....and a subject for another place and time. With that in mind all I can say is that I really...

I think this album falls into the category of " coulda been, shoulda been." The songs are good - it's an enjoyable listen, tune-wise. Unfortunately the surround mix sucks. Nearly total ambience in the rears. For 99% of the time the surround experience does not happen.

For some reason, I've always liked this one too, in fact, the whole Breakaway album to me is a winner. Especially in quad. It's so discrete, you can kill the vocals and just hear the orchestra track on some of the tunes. An excellent quad mix.

Hmmm....it appears the release date for this has been delayed!?!?!?!?!?
Or is Amazon just screwing with me.
I've canceled the Amazon order and went with burning shed. Something is up. Red wouldn't even ship until the end of the month while burning shed is already shipping them.

American Beauty on DVD-A is a total revelation for a quasi-Dead fan who only owns 3 of their albums and some concert boots.
Great songs brought even further alive with this mix; Micky Hart did a great job and hopefully can talk Warner into making some DVD albums with the catalog.

This one was a nice suprise. Really active mix. Really good songs. Great musicians. Has a very open and powerful overall sound. The music is hard to catorigise but its all good in fact its one of those albums that ends to soon leaving you wanting a few more tunes. Its is short at around 43min. 9

I can only really tell you what I have read. But in general it would be Matrix Mic or Multitrack recorded or mixed to 4 discrete channels. Then that 4 track tape would be encoded down to a 2 track tape (although your idea of encoding on the fly while cutting would be better for fidelity and noise). I'm not sure if dolby was ever used but it would seem logical that someone would use it since you ...

SACD/DVD-A are, for the most part, kaputski. I know, I know, King Crimson, PT etc.....but these releases are miles from the mainstream. I don't think BR will make any kind of dent in MC music as the disc would be severely underutilized and the average consumer associates BR with video, not audio.
But I'm a huge cynic so you might wanna ask the more optimistic members.
