How Much Mark Up Is Their On Spas?

QUOTE (spatech (the unreal one) @ Dec 1 2009, 11:14 AM) Wow, excellent margins Roger!! Actualy I never listed my total investment to calculate margins for you. But I would say 30-40% minumum if we leave most of my sweat out. But I gota babysit them for a year or more. Which has turned out to be not so bad. Just picked up a 6 year old Keys/Phsudo Jacuzzi. Re-post Of Intro Questions
Published (2009-11-30 20:04:00)
Answering your questions inline below, putting your questions in bold for easier distinction. Is there a large movement to go "green" and use no chemicals at all? There are only a very small number of people going "green" as you described it with "natural" pools adding virtually no chemicals. These fall basically into two camps. Those using sphagnum moss or other natural filtration and...

To Shock Or Not To Shock?
Published (2009-12-01 14:24:00)
QUOTE (PaulR @ Nov 22 2009, 06:07 PM) In general you shouldn't need to shock unless you have an algae outbreak, or find combined chlorine (CC) higher than 0.5ppm. Some people think you should shock weekly regardless, but it's really not necessary. You could avoid the upsell from the pool store if you got your own high-end test kit and did your own testing. In fact Leslie's sells one, which they call the FAS-DPD...

QUOTE (lpad @ Nov 30 2009, 07:41 PM) I didn't realize there was a risk of bacteria in a brand new tub not used by anyone else previously. Can I at least skip the spa flush step or will there still be 'gunk' in the lines of a brand new tub? Spas are wet tested, usually with recycled water, at the factory. This water remains in the lines during shipment and storage. It may be many weeks/months before the spa is...

QUOTE (djousma @ Nov 30 2009, 10:23 AM) We drink in the tub too, but usually, when it is just my wife and I. When we entertain, we keep the soaking time short. Mostly because the temptation to whiz in the tub by the visitors might be too tempting for them.....I don't know that, but I'm just sayin..... Now that's funny! Here is a reference that says this: QUOTE The Effect of Monopersulfate Shocking on Phosphate As explained previously, phosphates exist in several forms, but it is the orthophosphate which is most important to remove. One practice used in municipal water treatment is to break down phosphate complexes into orthophosphate using persulfate oxidation. By the same token, it can be very beneficial to shock a swimming pool using a non-chlorine shock...

QUOTE (Nitro @ Nov 6 2009, 12:11 PM) I'm of the opinion that 3500ppm Salt is not at all corrosive to hot tubs. I've yet to hear anything to the contrary. I was very reluctant to use test strips instead of my Taylor kit...but I have had good results using Leisure Time Test Strips. Were you using the gas heater or the spas heater. If it was the spa heater that does seem a little slow but still within normal limits for some. What is the volts across both heater legs? From reading your post it looks like you were testing between nuetral and a leg one at a time. If the heater itself is only getting a total of 120 volts the KW rating is about half and will take longer to ...

Outside measurements often do not tell the real story. It's all about the design. Width of lip, size of footwell etc etc. Some companies do a far better job in creating more space in side the tub.

76 days ... that's about the length of my baqua nightmare. Use Nitro's Decontamination Procedure and Approach To Water Maintenance . You'll spend about $2/month on bleach. If done right, you will have sparkling water for many months with absolutely no chlorine odor.

Great response Chemgeek. Thank you. Since I have a CD ozonator, I'd likely use less than those amounts listed then. wow...that seems like one hell of an electric bill for a tub in a climate like California's. I do not live in a semi-communist state, so I don't get penalized for using additional energy. With that said, my bill only increased by about $25 per month....and I live in Minnesota. Sounds like something may be wrong there.
