If you run "man radeonhd" you should see the info (if not then your driver is probably too old ). Adding Option "ForceLowPowerMode" "on" to the device section of xorg.conf should work.

Get NV G210, from MSI you even git it with passive cooling. Not for gaming but for videos best choice.

Useless effort anyway, i don't think that it was usefull at all. Packages which could be compiled with cpu optimisations like mplayer are outdated in all cases and have to be recompiled anyway. For a standard package you gain usually nothing.

They're totally different. Clock Gating enables internal logic inside the GPU that turns off the clocks to blocks which are not being used.
DynamicPM is an extension of ForceLowPowerMode (are you using that ?) which sets the engine clock very low when the the display is blanked by DPMS.

Call me troll but unless OSS driver provides support for new ATI cards, I'm holding on buying any of them. The fglrx is just such a deep sh*t that hurt me too much for my forgiveness, be it the latest version, still crap, period.

R700 has h264 decode capability via XvBA on the closed driver. I have no idea about the state of 3d on that driver.
The open driver supports 3D up to R700, but no video decode *yet*, though it *will* support video decode acceleration via shaders.

Just for clarification, the current driver *does* support shaders and most of the games running on them are using shaders. What they don't support is GLSL - only the ARB_vp/fp shader language. The changes to support GLSL and OpenGL 2.0 will mostly be made in the mesa drivers, not radeon/radeonhd.

You need kernel 2.6.32 for 3D on r6xx/r7xx hardware. You need to completely remove fglrx to use acceleration on the open source driver.

It is really unclear how h264 should be faster with a newer intel drivers. You can only use xv for it (no vaapi support yet) and that's more or less the same for every driver.
If you encode mpeg2 full hd or fetch a mpeg2 (interlaced) broadcast from somewhere then you should be able to see a difference with a new mplayer-vaapi. Sadly deinterlace is not available with it yet - but OSD works at ...

Hopefully shouldn't take too long once I get the hardware. Modesetting should be pretty quick. Accel may take a bit longer.

Phoronix: libvdpau, libva Both Updated Today
In hopes of pushing VDPAU beyond just being a NVIDIA Unix driver technology and to make it an open standard for Linux video driver developers wishing to provide HD video acceleration on Linux via the GPU, NVIDIA released a standalone VDPAU library back in September and have been trying to push some VDPAU bits for DRI2.Today NVIDIA has updated its ...
