Slight upgrade

Your motherboard can handle a PCI-E 2.0 card. It's backwards compatible. I'd be more concerned about what you might have for a PSU. That Netgear card doesn't like 64 bit Windows. I'd look for a replacement that has good drivers for your OS.

Vista Registry

Honestly, I wouldn't be messing around in the registry unless there was a very good reason to do so (for instance, if symantec.com had manual removal instructions for the specific virus in question that antivirus or antimalware software couldn't get rid of). Do you currently have any antivirus software installed? If not, I'd recommend AVG Free. Run a scan with that and see what it comes up with. And for a good measure, also run...

Good budget box?

Sounds like a good plan to me. Try it on the integrated video. Then if not fast enough check out the options that have been suggested in the $50 and up video cards. You have given yourself room with the PSU selection to do the upgrade if needed.

foxfire profiles, etc

Advice accepted and appreciated, but my curiosity is now peaking. I gather there is more to saving and copying over profiles that just dragging and dropping and there may be more info than can fit inside a forum reply, so can you suggest a site for me to peruse for more details in this 'backup' matter? I did download Mozbackup and will certainly explore the program. Thanks again for all the help.

How do you power CCFL tubes?
Published (2009-11-19 22:23:00)
I think you need to connect them to a working inverter. The inverter in a laptop is kinda like a ballast in a standard florescent fixture. It converts the 12v (in the case of the laptop) to the voltage necessary to power the lamps. This looks like a good read. http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm

The Neo is acceptable if it's the ATX 2.0 model with a 24 pin main connector and the dual +12v rails. AMD chipset is now preferable. AM2 and AM2+ take DDR2, AM3 takes DDR3. If you use DDR2, 800 speed is fine. If you use DDR3, get 1333 speed. Consider 4gb. No ram coolers needed. Note that the new boards only have one IDE controller, so if all 3 of your devices are IDE, one will have to go....

Yep, when I bought the wife's new laptop (Asus) in Sept at BB, the sales person was trying to sell me all kinds of crap though G Squad until I told him I'd forgotten more things about computers than they know, he shut up and I left with the laptop. also i realized a little while ago i had a back up of my C: drive on my other harddrive. I used acronis to load it back in restarted, and it goes to the Windows logo then back to the motherboard screen like its rebooting and starts all over again. I don't want to wipe the drive and reinstall windows because im not too sure that it's going to work anyway, if neither of these 2 options have worked...

That Sapphire card is more powerful but if your use of CAD programs really is minor that may not be a problem.
What would be a problem is whether or not they'll run with Win 7 so, before you buy anything, go over to the Win 7 compatibility page and make sure everything you intend to carry over will run under the new OS.
When you know that then you can make your hardware choices.

A lot of the failures I've seen have to do with motherboards and/or graphics, with HDDs a close second. The drives I could see as being subject to abuse, but the motherboard/graphics failures seem like they're more attributed to defects than abuse. Course, there's also the overheating of components due to dust accumulation, so that may factor into some of the motherboard/graphics failures.
