where to start in construction?

You could always go to Barnes and Nobles or any other book store and sit down with as many related books as you can find. I have found their selection to be more modern that your local library. -Aaron http://www.americanprideroofing.com

Slab thickness
Published (2009-12-08 20:03:00)
Thanks RTF about 3/4 of the pea gravel is already in place. Itwas placed on virgin dirt. The top soil was removed down to hard chert. On average there is about 5 inches of 3/4" limestone gravel on top of the chert and the gravel was very well compacted with water and a tractor running over it back and forth. I decided to go with the pea gravel over the gravel because its less likely to poke a hole in the plastic and its suppose to...

Factors affecting productivity...
Published (2009-12-07 19:41:00)
Much depends on the project size. If it is small, you go by the local codes and use the familiar methods and then just rely on day to day scheduling and supervision. If you are building an apartment complex in Brazil that has 10 to 20 buildings of 12 to 22 stories using 6" block loadbearing walls that exceed American standards, you have to plan ahead and minimize design errors, eliminate construction deviations and maximize speed of...

You need to compact the soil before you install the gravel. This is how we do it here , compact the soil, install 4" of "57" stone [#5 & #7 sized granite], termite treatment, 6 mil plastic, wire mesh and 4" of concrete.

Fiber mesh may well be sufficient-----proper subgrade material and compaction will also be very important regardless of what you use. You may be able to get some good local guidance from concrete finishers in your area who are familiar with concrete suppliers you would be using.

What is the best metal roofing?
Published (2009-12-08 15:15:00)
Things I've learned while researching my metal roofing options: Aluminum expands MUCH more than aluminum in the heat, hence, it tends to buckle (warp). Be careful of this if you plan on using a flat panel with raised seams only. You may find that the "flat" field warps when hot. Steel is also recyclable. Copper roofs may be expensive but they improve in appearance with age and last virtually forever if properly installed.

Water Heater Closet Question
Published (2009-11-29 15:24:00)
The office room size will be approximately 12.5' x 12.5' by 8' high. the volume of air in the room does not meet the manual's confined space requirement. So I need to have a supply of outside air. Edit: I think I found the solution. I just need two 6" ducts horizontally ran to the outside. I can frame and sheetrock around the ducts. that would fulfill the 1 in sq per 2000btu opening requirements.

Nope. Except where you have bearing points. Bearing points and thickened footings should be calculated by an engineer.

Follansbee stainless or terne is probably about the best but out of anyones range I've worked for. Standing seam steel is the next, screw down steel is next, locally here Fabral is a popular supplier. I would put aluminum below that because it is brittle. Give me shingles any day myself.

Go with a metal roofing system. You will have a wide range of color selections, it is easy to install, and it lasts for years.

The skill and/or experience is just a labor factor in the on-site supervision. Total productivity is a construction situation that can be limited by a poor design, selection of materials, but the end productivity is measured by doing was can be done to use the materials required on the plan provided.

It all depends on the floor and roof framing above and what kind or lateral loads you have(wind, seismic, etc.).
Unfortunately, you are building with masonry columns that probably have a very poor lateral or just a flexible diaphragm that does little to tie the real structure together. 12x12 reinforced block columns will be far stronger than 12x12 reinforced brick columns because of the small,...
