I've never been a fan of VBV - mostly because it was never marketed to consumers properly (unlike Chip & Pin) and because the actual implementation is a poor user experience. Feels like an exercise in shifting risk rather than something genuinely for the benefit of users. Anyway, there's an article and lots of great follow up comments at Verified by Visa: a conversion rate killer? Unless you've been forced to...

Running 2 x Analytics Programs
Published (2009-11-26 09:18:00)
If employing two analytics tools, would this have an effect on page loads for the website? Speaking to our technical dept, they seem to think that by introducing a 2nd analytics tool such as Google analytics this could be a problem

Indeed, it's a very good question. One thing I'm doing at the moment is passing the CustomerID back to GA using Custom Variables. I can then find out exactly which regular customers are still coming in via paid search, and target them with a "add us to your favourites" campaign. It's early days yet so I don't know the figures, but I'll let you know.

No worries Matthew. The title can also read "What % of ad impressions are consumed by existing relationships"? Impressions = display advertising (which I should have also been clearer about as well). That said, I’m actually quite keen to hear related paid search stories. The question [for you?] being “What % of paid search clicks [cost and/or business events] are mapped to existing relationships”? The last detailed analysis I...

Hi Ashley thanks for the common sense outlook... it always falls into place on monday morning! SEO is a major consideration of course, and the use of multiple domains would inevitably incur the need for duplicated content with its implied SEO negative effect. thanks for taking the time to offer your opinion

Published (2009-11-25 16:18:00)
Hi all, I've only just started seeing a few people saying that best practice in conversion rate is to EXCLUDE your bounced visits from the calculation, i.e. Number of sales / (visits-bounced) I can see the logic of this, but find it interesting that Google Analytics doesn't offer a metric for this, meaning we have to work it out manually. What is everyone's opinion? Do you track this metric? Is it more valuable for you than...

Google Webmaster Verification
Published (2009-11-25 20:36:00)
Hi Matt, I think there is a way of doing this but it very much depends on the programming and how your site (and undelying database) is structured. If you email me with more details perhaps I can help. regards, Denis www.naxtech.com - web development and online marketing

Google Webmaster Verification
Published (2009-11-25 16:26:00)
Hello there. I am working with a very large organisation and have been trying to fathom if Google Webmaster Tools can verify websites based on redirects. I fear not. In short the company is using the following URL convention 'www.company.com' for everything. No URL masking in place or friendly URL's. If a UK brand of said company has a website then a redirect of www.brand.co.uk takes the user back to...

affiliates bidding on my brand
Published (2009-11-23 19:23:00)
To easier identify the affiliates who send a specific sale, get linkshare to pass on the analytics the affiliate id. This will allow you to identify affiliates who use multiple sites but they have only one or two registered with the network and also the affiliates who send traffic from search engines. If you find a dodgy affiliate give their ID to the network and it will be easy for them to find the particular affiliate. Common indicators...

Hi Simon,
The main thing to remember is that each Analytics software actually has its own definition for measuring things and comes with its own set of assumptions. Hence why you often may get very different figures from two or more analytics programs.
Now, to answer your questions:

Hi Matt,
I think it's time to dig out the server log files! ( though I fear this can't be done)
What is the verification bot actually looking for when you fire it? I fear, since the return call is coming from a different domain, the verification bot is freaking.
What is it in GWT that you're trying to find out? Does the home.doID return a competely differnt site, pages, ...

Sorry James, trying to make sense of this.
Is the question, what percentage of ad clicks are in fact existing customers, not including retargets?

Hi Gareth, can't you create a custom segment for non-bounce visits then apply that to the conversion figures?

Hi Tatiana
This would concern me too. It sounds like they're not actually trying to hide anything ( e.g. white text on white background) but they're effectively keyword stuffing through internal links.
I'm not sure if/how exactly the search spiders would crawl those hover over links anyway (assume they're done with JavaScript...?).
I doubt these changes would backlash on ...

I think zero tolerance usually works. Make sure all new affiliates know that even if they are caught once in breach of the TCs they will be booted out.
I agree with you, personally we spend alot on our SEM/PPC activity and we have thousands of affiliates who promote us. Every once in a while we do catch some affiliate bidding on our brand term and effectively costing us, in these ...

Hi Ben
I guess it depends on how much overlap there will be in the different franchises and how customers will perceive the franchises - do you want them to know/feel there is a bigger holding group somewhere or will they be highly localised and customised?
There are certainly advantages of keeping 1 domain with sub-directories for the different franchises. Not just in managing...
