2000 Intrigue overheating when idle
Published (2009-11-04 15:19:00)
I'm well aware of the water pump aswell. I'm not certain, but when I usually had to take my car in for fixing, usually they have to repair more then one part. I've read somewhere that smelling engine coolant outside the car aswell as white smoke coming from the exhaust is a sign of bad head gaskets? Not possitive there, but I wouldn't be suprised to hear that I need a new thermostat, water pump, and head gaskets if...

Oil in Coolant Surge Tank
Published (2009-11-05 15:18:00)
Dean504, Glad it was only the belt! My '97 has 240k miles and someone recommended I add Bars for preventative maintenance. I don't have any leaks and the coolant has been replaced every 60k. New radiator last year. I don't like the idea of adding "fillers" to a working system. Why did you add Bars and are you happy with the results? -Tim

If it is in the gas tank, you will need to extract it from the top. You may
also have one on the passenger side of the motor under the AC. If it is on
the motor, there will be two rubber lines that run from the tank and one
metal line that goes to the carburetor. It should have two bolts for
removal. One on top and one on the bottom.

be careful with your conclusion on the overheating issue.the t-stats on
these cars are designed for very long life and must be replaced with an
original part.good luck.

I had a 95' Aurora and it would always run on the hot side, but the over
heating warning never came on. Eventually I found out the water pump had a
small crack that leaked fluid (very slowly, but fast enough to effect the
temperature). Once that was fixed it ran a little cooler, but not much

Hey jFreezzy,
All coolants that I'm aware of have an optimal concentration - usually around 50%, but read the back of the Dex-cool bottle to get the right info. Go less OR more and you get worse cooling effect. It's good that you are returning to a 50/50 mix for this reason.
It sounds like you also have a cooling fan problem too, and you will have to pop the hood to see for sure, because you ...

You have what is commonly referred to as a "quad4 engine" Which is a piece of GM's worst engineering ever..
It's the only engine in modern history that actually used the timing chain to drive the water pump. A really stupid idea. And that's the least of that engines weaknesses.
Bottom line is it would be difficult fora mechanic to get the timing chain off just replacing the water pump but not ...

After reading recent posts, it looks like several of us have some electrical gremlins!
I have a 1992 88 Royale LS with 155k on it. It is actually the car my kids drive back and forth to school.
I had a rash of problems with it back in the spring (for some history) resulting in replacing the ECM and a new fuel pump. The crank position sensor was replaced, and then later on, the harmonic ...

There are two different ignitions used on these.. There is the Magnavox ignition and the Delco Ignition.. The magnavox has all 3 coils moulded together and bolted to the ignition module.. The delco has 3 coils (that can be replaced individually) bolted to the ignition module.. Teh delco ignition looks similar to the ignition used on the FWD 2. 8, 3.1 and 3.4 engines...
The magnavox ...
