Saginaw steering box replacement
Published (2009-11-19 10:29:00)
The box on my '78 CJ is going to need replacement soon. My plan is to get a re-built from my local, VERY good, parts guy. I've rebuilt them myself in the past with mixed results; I really think it takes a couple of special tools. For a replacement, I've learned that a box from the same year Waggoneer will bolt in, with the possible exception of the pitman arm. The Waggie boxes have variable ratio, and are generally beefier.

OT: Anyone Watching That WW II...
Published (2009-11-20 09:58:00)
I just can't get over how bone rattling some of that footage is. This isn't Hollywood special effects, this is the real thing, and you KNOW it... Almost feel it. I can see why they didn't distribute most of this footage for so long, it's VERY powerful, and very dark/grim. During the war, they didn't want the US citizens to see this and be horrified, and want to withdraw before the job was done, And after the war, they...

Fuel injection for a CJ question

IMHO, the 4.0L head on a 4.2L block is the best of both worlds. However, that said, it's good to know/remember that the '89 AMC EFI system is the Renix EFI. It's getting tougher and tougher each year to find parts for that system. If you really want to install a 4.0L head... opt for a newer head with the requisite newer EFI system.

Snow!!!
Published (2009-11-17 07:03:00)
Snow in KC in the middle of November? This is the earliest I ever remember snow here and I ain’t talking about a dusting. There is probably an inch and a half on the Jeep so far. It was a cool summer and been a cold fall. BRING BACK GLOBAL WARMING!!!!

Dana 30 hub upgrades? Studs? 30...
Published (2009-11-19 07:12:00)
Here is my take on this. Will covered much of this already. Hubs, stay external. The only weakness I have heard of with external's is that the bolts can back out and break. However, installing lock tabs (can be easily made from sheet metal or thin washers), or studs seems to cure this. In addition, the hubs that are most known for bolt back out are the newer 5 bolt type. The older 6 bolt type do not seem to have nearly as much problem. If...

homemade coil conversion

I can relate to the rough springs....I went through that phase as well.... I'm running stock Wrangler springs....rides great....and they are easy to find....typically any 4WD house will have a bunch laying around that came off jeeps they lifted....and in most cases they will let you hand pick a set....I paid $80 for a set of 4. If you think this is the way you want to go, let me know and I'll send you some detailed instructions and...

I use Grainger, Fastenal, Praxair, Rockford Industrial Welding Supply and McMaster-Carr.
I use to use MSC but they are more expensive then Grainger. Only down side with Grainger is you need a business account to use them. Unless that has changed. I use the company I work for and my father's business to get supplies threw all the one's I listed above.
I do believe you can buy stuff threw ...

Carnell...getting tired of that carb are we? Now you know why I went with the SBC....
Short answer....No....and yes....
Intake is totally different and will not fit the head....but, the 4.0 head will fit on your block.....'depending' on what size bolts you have....
I had an 89 Cherokee that I picked up as a stolen recovery....blown engine...I had a spare 258 block...so I had the head...

Interesting, I have never had that happen but I can see how it could.
What has gotten me is cross drilling into an other hole to add a set screw. If I drill to far and into the other side of the main hole, when i go to tap a similar thing happens when using a 3 flute tap. The tap starts trying to cut the threads on the other side of the hole but does not cut full depth and gets stuck on ...

Vinegar should remove the corrosion. Apply it with a small brush and wait.
You could use a soft toothbrush but be careful not to disturb any of the teeth.
After you get it clean, go to the notions section of a sewing/fabric shop and get a stick of bees wax to apply to the zipper. A crayon will work but the bees wax is better.
