2011 Ody: Hybrid or Diesel??
Published (2009-10-31 06:41:00)
I just read my own post and realize if a $22k Golf can pass EPA, I am sure a $30k-$40k Odyssey can too. Also, if there will be a diesel Maxima, there maybe a diesel Quest? C'mon Honda, give us a 30mpg diesel Odyssey/Pilot/Ridgeline that can tow a little more with just a slight premium in price and everybody is happy

When to replace timing belt?
Published (2009-10-31 18:33:00)
I do realize that I'll not be paying for labor if I replace the water pump & the tensioner now -- but, what are the odds that the these would fail over the next few years (given that the Ody currently has 36K miles & is 9 years old)? Also, what would happen if either of these fail? Would there be additional damage if the water pump or the tensioner fails (apart from the Ody just not functioning)? Am I looking at paying...

Actually, it was less than $15, cause I had a $10 off $25 purchase coupon that expires Dec 31. And since I was there, I purchased the 5 Mobil 1/Mobil 1 oil filter for $30 special. BTW, I downloaded the coupon off slickeals for anyone interested in saving $10.

I was looking at it closely and I agree, it's a bit bulkier..but for $57.00 I can definetely look for a spot for the bulky ballast and make the wires watertight.. thanks for the reply...

Aftermarket EGR Valve?
Published (2009-10-30 02:54:00)
Thanks for the responses. I forgot too that several of the big chain vendors around me offer lifetime replacement. I'll double check and may just go that route. At this point my goal is to reach 300k but not break the bank doing it.

LX owners who want the pollen filter. Don't bother wasting money at thestealership for an EX tray. The squares in the above picture are easily cutout (I used a utility knife - you know the kind from the hardware storethat you 'snap' off sections of the blade as they get dull). Once removed, you have an EX tray. I guess the squares are there on the LX to keep leavesand twigs etc. out of the blower ...

Here is the relay and the respective wiring connector
This shows the Red=relay trigger wire ; Middle connector for on/off switch / White wire= it's already fused and connect to battery
I drove the Ody onto two ramps to make the install easier. I recommend you remove the bumper, but I didn't and just dropped the bottom splash panel. With the bumper on, it makes ...

Can you try a DVD player in the rear jacks?
You might have a cable issue. It should just work if you plugged in the yellow pin to the yellow jack and are on AUX (since you get Audio, you are on AUX).
You might want to see if the word REAR is displayed in the radio. You do have to turn on Power to the RES screen and by default, if I am not mistaken, the rear power is OFF in Aux....

clearcoat faliure/fracture
i washed the ody today and i noticed that there were ALOT of spots where the clearcoat had fractured.
Do any other odysseys have this also?
Mine is an 05' built in 10/04.
it looks like the cracks in the picture, and when you run you nails through it its smooth.

I would recommend a vinyl protectant on the non-leather surfaces. Particularly one with UV screeners (I use vinylex).
Most leather conditioners do not have UV screeners although Xaino leather care does.
Honda does do a nice job on the pleather where they use it.
Hope this helps.

2. Chock REAR wheel (This is overkill and optional).
3. Start the engine and run it for 30 seconds (remember the engine still warm from your trip!) to mix up the oil and any contaminants (remember the engine is still warm from the previous trip!). Then shut the engine.

If it's either, I hope it's limited to the "Limited" model only. The ~$12K+ added for the option would only take about 20yrs to pay for with the marginal fuel economy boost you'd get with a hybrid or efficient turbo diesel. I'll keep my ~$22K lowly LX model and 20mpg any day.

This is why they say if it ain't broken don't ......
The dealer told me the same thing last week when I picked up my Accord. They said, it sometimes makes the vibration etc worse. So, I haven't taken mine in yet. They also told me that due to the issues, Honda has stopped sending out letters to all the customers. Mine does judder/drone pretty bad so I might just take it in and see ...

Priceless!
It seems that every make and model has their, well, "issues"
Not even Lexus is immune. On another forum I frequent, one member is a dealer tech, and oh, the stories he tells! They have (or had) an issue with premature transaxle death as well, so somebody pays $50K for a nice car/suv and 30K miles later BOOM goes the tranny!
If you really want to find out ...

Service managers have tremendous power to get "goodwill" repairs made. Sometimes you might have to cover some of the cost, but it usually comes down to the service manager/regional manager making the call. That's why it's important to play nice!
Technically, they're not responsible for it because you're out of warranty. Most TSB's are just notes telling the mechanics about ...

Is the D4 light blinking and/or a CEL on? If so, get the code.
If not, you can look up the post on " Root cause of transmission problems" and try to clean the screens and test the solenoids described in that post.
Other than that, you can have a remanufactured Honda transmission put in or an aftermarket.

If you want to go by the book then it should have been done by 7 years. You should know that the Odyssey V6 engine is an interference type, which means if the timing belt breaks prematurely it will most likely cause catastrophic damage.
You can inspect the timing belt by removing the front upper cover.
Inspect the timing belt for cracks and oil or coolant soaking. Replace the ...
