Oilfield trucks, trailers to be routed through Missoula, Lolo Pass starting next fall Un-flipping believable. Unfortunately no information about the route up the Lochsa, Hwy 12, which is about a dumb of a place to take huge trucks as anywhere. I'm searching for info, and spreading the word. Seems like it could be a big deal for a wild and scenic river with a death-trap road as a route. Sure, they'll build big pull-outs along the...

G'DAMN that guy is one good speaker!!! It's why I voted for him....how can you listen to him and NOT be inspired, NOT feel good about our country and what we stand for. Quite the eloquent speaker. However.....can any of you please enlighten me on how his MESSAGE was any different than G-dubs regarding the specific issue spoken upon?? Spoken far more powerfully, granted....but how was what he said much different than the evil Bush...

The low back is great for a lot of things. Probably better for class V overall, but you can't lock nearly as securely going over big drops (a really good footbar helps out here too -see Madcatr's design). Regardless for a trip like the Grand a high backs superior comfort is where it's at. Nothing like lounging with your feet kicked up, leaning back with a cold beer in your coozie.

Powerful speech. Confusing message. I'm torn.
Is 30,000 enough? Is it too late? Did Bush/Cheney completely eliminate the possibility of success with the Iraq distraction?
Obama is screwed no matter what he does. The public is done with Afghanistan after 8 years. He has very little support for this escalation, despite the fact that it's 10K fewer troops than McCrystal requested. And people ...

Hello all,
There seems to be a renewed push to expand Gross Mountain Reservoir. I am not very familiar with all of the issues at stake, but it seems to me this is flying under the radar which is never a good thing. I thought I would start the topic so there can be a better understanding of the issue and consequences. There is a public hearing this evening in Boulder . Here is a link ...

So people lie or mislead the public? That doesn't happen, I'm sure Obama's never done anything like that before.

I've only been once, but I can say if you go guided, make sure you get in a good group. My friend and I put ourselves in a slow hiking group because we didn't want to hold up the badasses. Instead, we outhiked our whole group by a long shot and were denied a trip to the billboard because of some dude that was "there to ski, not hike." Try to take enough friends to make your own group (as long ...

I just heard that one of the OG's Randy Kennedy has passed away. I received an email from my old job where I worked with Randy that he had a heart attack cross country skiing over the weekend. For those who new Randy, he was what this sport was all about. Good times, laid back attitude, exploration, and lots of stories told in that southern twang of his. I've boated with him alot but many others ...

I use a drytop with NRS Black rock drypants and it works pretty smooth. Little leakage and lots of buoyancy from the air trapped inside. I wear them with the drytop's inner tunnel layered under the top the of the pants and then the drytop's outer tunnel cinched tight over both. You might not be able to do that.
I tested out in lake before using in the river. You might want to do the same.

I would recommend spending as much time as possible in a playpark to dial in your roll. The Glenwood park is not ideal due to the lack of eddies there, but I don't know of any others near you. Avon would probably be the closest? Shoshone will probably be the third river run you do, after Grizzly Creek and Cemetary. It's a super fun and relatively safe section. As long as you get out quite a ...

You can run daily trips from Hwy 60 downstream and shuttling back on Apache Road 1. The multiday trip goes from Hwy 60 to Hwy 288 and is usually run in 3 to 5 days.
You can contact the USFS Tonto National Forest - Globe Ranger District for permit information and more information regarding the trip. Permits are required March 1 through May 15 and the deadline for permits is Jan. 15th 2010....

My warm-weather standbys are plain old Chacos, w/o the toe strap.
For the sort of funfest where you have to get out a lot and horse your boat over rocks, I wear the NRS Scout watershoes.
They're reasonably comfortable, well-made, and I can walk several miles in them barefoot without blisters. (Right now on sale for $38.95 which is a good deal). The NRS river shoes dry out pretty ...

FWIW, I recently paddled a Nomad after only ever paddling a Fun. This was on the Gauley; big water class IV. Granted I don't know how to paddle a displacement hull and the boat was probably too small for me (I'm 6' 180ish and I was in an 8.1), but I blew by just about every eddy I went for and couldn't ferry to save my life. Also, I took a swim after getting stuck in a hole that I probably ...
